Mauser 98 Chassis

Well after a lifetime of waiting for someone to make a Chassis for the Mauser 98 my buddy Lance Humbert from JGS Reamers has made some. I would say they are prototypes at this point. He was gracious enough to make two for me, They take AI style magazines, The cutout for the bolt handle should accommodate many custom bolt handle styles the way he has designed it.

They have a handguard adapter that uses Ar free float clamp on style handguards.

I think he wants to start making these if there is enough interest. He has very little spare time right now though and I hope he is ok with me posting this. I am very excited to start a rifle on one as soon as I get a chance.

I would also like to add, If you have been thinking about buying or ordering a custom or standard reamer, Headspace gauges etc. They have been able to get their lead times much quicker now, Approx 4 to 6 weeks

Here are some pics of his rifles with this Mauser 98 Chassis system he has developed. He posted these pics in a thread he made a few months back. And then the bottom pics are the chassis's he made for me.

Very cool. How's the fitment?
Are they intended to be skim-bedded? Problem with precision chassis' with older milsurps are dimensional variations; manufacturing 75 years ago- especially with rushed wartime production firearms.

There was a Russian company some years ago that tried to do one for the Mosin-Nagants, but there's just too much variation in action screw spacing to fit a precision chassis.

He should do one for the M1903/M1903a3...

My FN Commercial fits good, An Argentine 1909 Action I have fits good. But Yes, There may be small amounts of fitting involved due to the myriads of manufacturers.

And this is for the Large Ring Model 98, Not intermediates or Small rings.

As far as the 1903 goes, Not too many people customize those these days, I doubt there would be much call for them. I would be the first one to want one though.

Wow, these are gorgeous. Hopefully he can hop on here and give a comment on the price. Is anyone out there making a modern action that would drop in, or are all of the 98 actions milsurp or nos commercial? With this kind of setup I think I'd want to do a 300-winmag, so an original 98 is probably out. What is the height of your scope over the comb, it looks kind of high?

Since its my contraption I mean rifle I think I can answer.
Its an std EGW rail and IIRC those are Wheeler medium rings. With a 56mm scope it doesn't have alot of clearance at the hand guard. Depending on your scope, low rings would require clearancing a hand guard.
The bottom of the bolt just clears the buffer tube so the lowest stock comb is prob an 1/8 higher or so.
Chassis stocks get tall when a 1-3/16 thread tube is in between your grip and the action.
But this is one of the shorter ones , had to drop the indexing plate to get the grip high enough for the factory trigger.
Currently this 300PRC gun has a Interarms mark X but the first action was an FN Supreme.
The supreme had a hard life of hott hand loads and overpressured 230gn 300PRC was the last straw.

At any rate, I'm figuring these will go for $300 and come "in the white" bare alum with a vibratory finish. Right now its just my personal job / project so don't call the JGS Precision tool office looking for them.

The commercial Mauser and the Military Mauser 98's are pretty much the same, There are minor differences and minor variations in measurements. But they are miniscule. Nothing that couldn't be massaged to fit.

Zastava may still be making actions, They are the people that made the Interarms Marx-X, Charles Daly, Remington 798 Etc. But mostly You can find a good commercial or military action on the second hand market.

Here is a pic of my 1909 Argentine sitting in the printed model.

Well, depends on which "original 98". Pre '42 M98k's can be fine (nothing of wartime manufacture), as can be M98's from other countries especially those made by FN. All of them need to be inspected prior to using for a custom build, as Lance shows in his photo lug setback can be a huge problem since these are case-hardened and not through-hardened. Only fix is to machine them and have the receiver re-hardened.

It's not an inexpensive endeavor, receiver and boltface modifications are needed as is a bent bolt assuming you'd want to scope it; and care must be taken not to overly lengthen the magazine opening as any material removed there is directly behind the lower lug- not a good situation.

I did a 300 WM conversion for a customer a few years back, and it was with a lot of caveats to the owner- including keeping pressures low. The commercial actions are a better choice for a build.
