Mauser 98 vz24 action max pressure.

It is a problem if you remachine the lug abutments and do not
have it recase hardened.
This is my old 458Lott that is headed to Africa for a Cape Buffalo hunt. It is a VZ24.

Yes, The case hardening is very thin, I have seen quotes anywhere from 0.005 to 0.020 as far as case thickness. Most receivers I have seen that are set back are usually set back too much to not go past the case hardening.

Very nice Mauser Butch!

458 Lott stands for Lotts of recoil! :D

I got the gun done at a gun school hard to take it back.
So, find a gunsmith who will examine the action and set the barrel back (if the action is not already compromised with lug set-back). Be a lot lower cost than a re-chamber. I'd not put any of the Noslers on any military or commercial '98 that is case hardened.

I have a switch barrel set on a VZ24. 300&375 H&H. Probably a hundred rounds on each load testing and hunting. Zero issues with either.

Get a new bolt and go happy.

According to the OP, the gunsmith sunk the reamer in too far causing the primer pockets to expand. Primer pockets do not expand due to HS; they expand because pressures are too high. Now, the rifle may have excessive headspace, but if the primer pockets are expanding, that's not the reason. As to all the rest, I have no comment except, That's a real nice rifle, Butch, and shows a Mauser done right. The 458 Lott is at the top end of what should go into a 98 IMO. WH
