MagnetoSpeed Chronogrph

I just got mine yesterday (they were behind on production until July 30th I guess) I'm carving out time tomorrow to try it..can't wait!! It's already better than my old Chrony because it fits in my range box and doesn't need it's own tripod!

Jeff: Another advantage: If your shooting from under a roof & it starts to rain, no need to rush out in front of the firing line to retreive all the equipment.

I have my setup time down to less than 2 minutes, takedown time about the same & it's so nice to not have to shutdown the firing line when you need to go downrange.

I left my Shooting Chrony 1 on a table in the clubhouse with a note: "Free to take".

I would have never felt good if trying to sell it to someone else.

The big brown truck showed up this morning. I slapped the magneto thingy on my 22-250 AI and my 6br and it registered 5 shots from each. Didn't change any settings just strapped it on and shot. 6br velocity was right in line with the shooting chrony and it was the first time I chronoed the AI. I was shooting at 400 yd to sight in for a deal tomorrow and with the bayonet attached impact was +4" when compared to without on both rifles. I didn't do enough shooting to know about group size. I'm happy so far, didn't have to worry about shadows or the wind blowing the tripod over.

I feel the same about my shooting chrony.

Come to think of it, I might just put a hole in it, just for retribution for all the headaches and wasted components trying to get a good reading. Haha.

Has anyone used it with a muzzle brake? I tried mine on my 6.5x47 Lapua and got readings about 1/2 of the time for 20 rounds then it quit. I have a feeling it was not level with the bore but I don't know.

Two brakes on two different 6BRs and used it on an AR. No issues. I set mine with the barrel end, not the brake end, a half inch forward of the cutout. The website shows different applications.

Tip to all on the magnetospeed: Carry spare batteries and a small phillips head screwdriver. It takes 4 AAAs. My readings started varying wildly, in the range of 1000fps, and the batteries were the culprit. Changed them and everything returned to satisfactory operation.

I was present to watch a test session with the magneto at 1k yards this last Thursday. POI change was 1/2 MOA up @ 1k. Shooting was done with a Savage F-TR rifle and Berger 185's doing 2750ish.

I can't speak to the accuracy - I wasn't on the scope enough to determine the group size before and after. I just saw the last 2-3 shots before installation and 2-3 after.

Mine should be here next week.

How long did your original batteries last?

Best guess is a couple hundred rounds or so. I leave the backlight on so I can see the readings. It's in gray monochrome. They note that the battery life is less with the light on.

Good News for those with large diameter target barrels!

Per the following email I got from them, they are going into production with a re-engineered version to accomodate us.

"Hey Frank,
We have had so much interest for custom bayos that we have more orders than we can handle at the moment! That plus some very promising tests we have done has led us to decide to build a commercial version (ETA 1-1.5 months)."

Good on 'em. These guys are sitting on a gold mine!

Frank B.

I have a large diameter barrel (1.25) and all i did was remove the rubber pad on the bayonet and place a piece of duct tape under the barrel where the bayonet would make contact and bingo it reads like a champ! also i get no point of impact shift @300M now like i did when the rubber pad was installed.

Batteries :P I was getting weird readings, then really low readings then no readings and since it was brand new, I didn't even consider batteries. We're going out of town for a bit but I'll change them when I get back and we'll see.

So far I am extremely pleased with this tool. Virtually no set up time and gives me consistent readings that work out on ballistic calculators anyway. Haven't gotten around to real world testing of the numbers yet but what I have is working. I don't think it makes a difference on group size but does change poi. Keep in mind I'm using a tape measure instead of calipers to measure groups.

And all this time precision shooters have been wasting their time and money with barrel tuners when apparently hanging something to the end of the barrel has no effect on accuracy! ???

Yes Eric, it hit me while I was typing it. That's where the tape measure disclaimer came in. Lol

I put mine on a 17Fb today and was getting all kinds of weird readings. 1600fps, then in the 2200s then 3600s. Groups were tight and no flyers. First time I've had these issues with new batteries. Going to give them a call tomorrow.

Emailed them this a.m. Heard back in a couple hours. They offered a replacement or a refund. Customer service A1 in my estimation. It worked great and on all kinds of guns, rifles, pistols, semis, with brakes, without brakes, an AR so am thinking electronics went TU.

The way I look at it . When I am able to get the $250 together it will go to $300 and when I get that it will go to $350 or $400. Why are so many people worrried about shooting groups and getting the speed at the same time. Don't want to spend the cost of 5 bullets and primers and powder out of your $2400 rifle with a $900 scope?

It has been over a month since I asked about the MS crono... the day after I asked, I went down on the harley (Minor bike damage, major ankel and knee sprains and havent been to the range since). Thank you all for your comments and experiences.. I will go to the range today (I think). I'll have extra batteries and duck tape. The rifle is new(er), the handloads are the first out of this rifle. I'll get back to you all but I'm feeling good about the new equipment..

I have one and also a CED. The readings are very, very close. The magneto has 2 major advantages.
1. It works under any light conditions. This is important. With my CED, the light conditions have to be spot on or else the readings get weird. Good luck shooting in the evening with that one. The Magneto alsways works, regardless of conditions.

2. It is FAR easier to use at a public range. I grew up in the country and shot at my house. The stand for the chrony was always set up and since I was the only one there, it didn't matter how long the set up was. Now I have the misfortune of living in a city and shoot at public ranges. Setting up a standard chrony at a public range is an absolute nightmare. All that walking back and forth, trying to get everything aligned, then walking back out to retrieve. If it's a busy day at the range, this becomes a headache. With the Magneto, you never have to leave your bench. Set up is literally less than 2 minutes and doesn't disturb anyone else at the range.

I believe that in the very near future, this company will be bought out for the technology. I'm guessing the old style chronies will be obsolete sooner than you think. I'd like to see a magnet based chronograph, like these, but re-engineered to set under the barrel but no attached. Then you'd have the best of both worlds.
