MagnetoSpeed Chronogrph

Anyone have any experience with this crono? Did a search, here, nada.

I'd be all for not having to 'set it up' down range.

Yea! Nae!??? $250 . http://www.magnetospeed.com/products/magnetospeed-v1-ballistic-chronograph

Here's where I first heard of it on snipershide.com:
http://www.snipershide.com/forum/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=3231447

I have a CED M2 and not only is it a pain in the arse to set up, but it can be tempermental with regard to the lighting. Rather than buying the optional IR sensors, or replacing it with an Oehler 35P or a Kurzzeit PVM-21 (all of which apparently work great but still have the set up issues), I'm going to order one, and keep the CED for when the Magnetospeed is not practical (i.e. pistols).

works fine for me, within a few FPS of my shooters chrony, which I will never take to the range again. I like it alot.

I compared it to my PVM-21 and it was very good: about 8-10fps faster, but very consistent. Assuming this chrono lasts, it's a steal. Durability is my only concern...time will tell. This chrono is SO much more convenient than traditional chronos. Just attach to your barrel and start shooting. When done pack it up in this very small box...no battery packs, tripods or other stuff.

just received one. my concern is ,will it ,being attached to barrel, change point impact, if so wont be much help working up load unless i keep taking off and on to get speed and point of impact!i think i made a mistake as this will have no place in a ladder test or shooting for accuracy unless you shoot more shots to determine velocity spread and group should tell what you need to know as you are shooting group not velocity spread.that being said it looks cool.

Been using mine a lot since getting it a month ago. Yes, point of impact will change, about 1" vertical with the bayo mounted at 6:00, but for me that's a plus, since I'm not destroying my aiming point. Hold in the center of the bull & the 5 shot group will be 1" high. If that bothered me I'd just click down.

Not sure, yet, about how or if it effects group sizes. I have one 5 shot group at 100 yards, with one of my 6ppc's, bayo attached, that measures .150".

One of my chamberings has been a disappointment with uncalled high and low shots, beginning at 200 yards, and worse at 300. Chronographed the loads yesterday and had some real ugly numbers. Maximum velocity was 2596 and the minimum was 2523, for a difference of 73 fps. SD was 21.

My ppc & BR chamberings all have differences of 14 to 20 fps, with SD's between 6 and 10.

I'll not be using the problem load ever again. Without the chronograph I'd still be wasting time, components & barrel life trying to find the cause of the vertical wild shots.

Anyone hooked it up to their air rifle or slung some cast bullets through it? I have read on one review cast bullets seamed fine however when I asked the manufacturer they said it wouldn't work. After some real world info.

thanks fdshuster, didn't want to use it so i could send it back but your experience tells me "the sky is not falling"thanks again! if i want to sell it i already have a $100.00 offer.

doc: If you have a problem with it, you can return it & they will give you the choice of an exchange or a refund.

I sent my first one back, not because of anything being wrong with it, but because of my own stupidity. "Spoke" to Alex Sitzman numerous times via e-mail & they were many times more helpful than anyone could expect. They bent over backwards to solve my problem (self-induced), patiently answered my questions, and sent a replacement unit immediately. Their customer support is second to none.

Now that I've learned how to use it ( I never was a whiz on things electronic) it has been one of my best investments, right up there with the Hawkeye Borescope.

Thanks guys....you just sold me. Ordered one today, already on the way. Can't wait to "play" with it! ;D

We've tested one extensively, with an Oehler 35P and PVM21 in line. Have to get the data into graphs and complete the write-up.

Some observations.

1. It won't work with .17 or .22 Cal airgun pellets. Yes we tried.
2. It WILL work with .22LR Rimfire but you have to use the custom bullet option to increase sensitivity, and it may be necessary (depending on your barrel diameter), to remove the rubber spacer pad between barrel and bayonet v-Block
3. The clamping system needs refinement. A batch of units got out with snaplocks that were too brittle. On the first unit we tried, the clamp BROKE the first time we installed it. This has happened to other users.
4. It is VERY important that the unit is attached very tight, so it can't move on recoil or vibrate.
5. It will work will all-lead bullet, with the unit set for "non-magnetic".
6. When the strap held firm, we never got a non-reading over three hour-long shooting sessions.
7. The values were much closer between the PVM-21 and the Oehler. I haven't crunched the numbers yet, but I believe we'll see that ES is greater for centerfire bullets with the MagnetoSpeed. To wit: if we saw a range of say, 25 fps with 20 shots over the Oehler, we might see 45 fps ES with the Magnetospeed. BUT, I caution, I haven't plotted all our data yet.
8. It is a very valuable tool and it remarkably small and light. The bayonet AND the control/display unit will fit in the glove compartment of a pickup truck.
9. We think the nylon strap is too slippery. The Manufacturer is now offering a slotted rubber gasket that can increase the "stiction" on the strap so it's less likely to slide.

Good News for those with large diameter target barrels!

Per the following email I got from them, they are going into production with a re-engineered version to accomodate us.

"Hey Frank,
We have had so much interest for custom bayos that we have more orders than we can handle at the moment! That plus some very promising tests we have done has led us to decide to build a commercial version (ETA 1-1.5 months)."

Good on 'em. These guys are sitting on a gold mine!

What are your thoughts on using this when doing a ladder test for load development? Is it going to give you reliable hits on target or do you think it will change POI enough to screw up the results or will it be consistently high/low with all the rounds so that you could use it?
Jason

From all the reviews, it seems to change POI but not grouping, with the POI changing depending on how you attach it. If you do a ladder, I would imagine the results would be reliable if you don't take it on and off between shots and just leave it on.

I think ladder testing would be feasible with the unit. The unit would have to stay attached for the entire series, and position of the bayo to the barrel must stay the same for every shot. The new more 'grippy' strap should help with that.

I plan on trying to work up a load with the unit attached, and see how it does. However, I will be using the OCW method to develop the load, because, at my range, the distance is not far enough to conduct meaningful ladder tests.

Man, this is good news! The only thing that's been keeping me from getting one is my 1.250" barrels.....

I think I'll get on the waiting list for the new version.

Forum Boss: I noticed in your picture that you have one thickness of the strap only going over the top of the barrel, the reason for the long length of "leftover" strap?

I'm using mine with the double layer, as pictured on their direction page. Have never had a problem with the strap coming lose, the bayo moving, or any overstressing of the spring-over clip.
