Lyman Borescope

OK

Just received the Borecam and REVELATION
Took pix of my first gun - 1965 (yeah, my timing sucks) Win Mod70 in 30-06
Can you say pitting? How it shoots as well as it does is a wonder to me now.
Will attach one of the pix (maybe, if I figure it out)

did look into the barrel of a just acquired 300 WM with a Lilja barrel -pristine.

I think I am going to get some disturbing results on many of my well used guns.

PS...I think you have to do a regular Reply, not a Quick Reply

Wow, I'm impressed with the image you got. That's amazing imagery coming from an instrument in the less than $300 range. BTW, my Sympathies on your Model 70 30-06.

Regards.....

Xhuntress,

This is the only pix I took down at the start of the lands/grooves-just above the leade

Talked with the Lyman CS guy, Joe, and asked for hints and tips for better pix and what he said and I will try is to either use a clean patch just in front of the camera or my Surefire flashlight held at the muzzle and throwing some light down the bore--Aaaaah, the joys of a new toy.

One thing you can do is rig some sort of rest to put the scope rod on so it stays steady while you press the capture button. Its impossible to hold it steady with your hand.

Using the "sled" that I clean in-I think it is an old Caldwell-adjustable type that seems to work well

As to lalnds worn away, think it may just be my p---poor photographic technique that I hope to hone :-*

Dixie,
It is a 50 year old barrel owned and maintained originally by a 18 y.o. kid who knew nothing more than Hoppe's and it went probably
20 years in a gun case without any care at all- in reality, probably what it should look like.
If I did not have 30 other rifles to pick from, I probably would have it re-barreled but I may leave that for the next generation to do ::)

I received my Lyman borecam from Grafs that I had forgot I ordered last winter! lol Im impressed. For $220 it is everything that I expected. It offers a good quality view that shows carbon, copper, fire cracking, voids in the barrel steel and an off center chamber job. I have looked down a hand full of different bbls ranging from factory remington and winchester to a few different quality aftermarket bbls and it has shown me things that I've never seen before just due to not wanting to spend $800 to be able to. If you've ever thought it would be nice to take a look down the bore but havent, its now possible for not much money.

fastnflat--Ignorance was bliss wasn't it :(

all along I was complacent about the condition of my barrels and now with a $220 borescope I know that many of the barrels on my older guns are for s---!

I know that this information is necessary but it is disconcerting nonetheless.

Enjoy the new toy.

This is going to be interesting. Lyman makes good products . I would buy one pending reviews.

I respectfually disagree; I've had some REAL STINKERS from Lyman.

Their AUTOSCALE automatic powder dispenser? Rated +/- 0.1 grain; the one I got was +/- ONE grain after lots of tweaking from Lyman support. I sent it back and most gladly ate the 10% restock fee. Could YOU live with that?

I have a Lyman "Mag Tumbler" that was exchanged for an earlier weak cheese model wherin the plastic "base plate" broke about the fifth time I used it.

When the injection molded plastic base (the mechanical plastic interface between the bowl on top, the suspension on the bottom), on the new "MAG TUMBLER" cracked, I sent THAT base back to Lyman; they din't even recognize the product, and of course, had not a replacement for the POS (Piece of S**T) base.

Can you imagine a company like this NOT RECOGNIZING ONE OF THEIR PRODUCTS? With their LOGO on it?

Thankfully I had scanned in the broken base with a ruler for reference before sending the base back to the factory. I printed the scan (adjusted to 100%, which you don't always get with this kind of procedure.) I got a piece of 1" thick MDF cut into modestly rough circle of the base plate diameter. I proceed to drill the thru and thru/countersunk holes on a drill press (you could do it with a hand drill if careful) and reassembled the unit. Runs like a top, no thanks to Lyman after BOTH tumbler products failed. Why don't the fools that Lyman buy these products from recongnize that a plastic base plate for a tumbler is truly awful to engineer this product?

If the Lyman fools had their stuff packed tighter, and if they really gave a S**T about their customers, they could have made me this replacement part in MDF for about a 40 minute effort on the FIRST unit, and perhaps 20 seconds thereafter if properly setup -- it would NEVER BREAK AGAIN !

Instead they said, "We don't have any of those." With "ROTSA RUCK" implied.

I now buy LYMAN products with caution.

I got an email from Midway that they had the Lyman borescopes in stock but by the time I signed on they were gone. Hopefully the pipeline will fill and they'll be again available.

That's strange. When I talked with Lyman before sending mine back, they said it would be January before they could replace it. I got the impression that they were frustrated with perfecting the product and some parts were going back to the drawing board, so to speak. Maybe I misinterpreted. They certainly asked detailed questions about the problem with mine,
