Love for the 308

You will have to tell us what you think...Im curious if there's anything to the hype.
My 168smk arent too bad either with some Varget, so just wondering if a 169gr is any better.
Midway had them a week or two ago (it all blurs). I put them in my cart, went to find enough other supplies to qualify for the free shipping deal that was on and by the time that I checked out, they were already spoken for. I too want to give them a shot some day as my particular rifle loves the Hornady 168 AMAX, now ELD-M. It also likes their 165 SST.

Hoot

Absolutely will report once I get it on the bench. If IMR-4064 don't look good I plan to try IMR-8208 & Varget. CFE-223 looks really interesting when looking at Sierra manual under 168 gr.

O K Bro, here is the story with the 169 gr. Sierras today.

ONCE FIRED AND F/L SIZED FEDERAL BRASS
169 GR. SIERRA HP BT M 2.191 O M 2.910 COL B S .587 B C .527
POWDER IMR-4064 44.3 GR. PRIMER FED 210M
SEATED @ 2.186 O M 2.905 COL .005 OTL
.088 3-SHOT GP. M V 2750 FPS E S 28 10/05/22

As you can see 44.3 gr. gave me the best group however, I worked up from 43.1 gr. and had really tight groups with all loads. Some of the lower charges showed me very low E S of 3 and 4 fps and all speeds were above 2700 fps. I realize this is first time out and will need to check it for duplication and for now I believe I will stay with IMR-4064.

Caliper was zeroed on a .308 bullet.

When I was around ten or twelve ; I heard my Uncles telling hunting stories of hunting the S.Western Pennsylvania mountains for Whitetail , and they all raved about their own . 308's . I asked my Grandfather why ; and he gave me that look only Grandfathers have , and said : No need to fix it . It ain't broke . I took his words to heart . I have two .

That's pretty close to what I'm getting with 43.2 gr IMR-4064 in term of velocity and small group sizes, though my COAL is at 2.929", regularly getting single digit SD and ES's in the mid teens for 5 shot groups; also using Federal brass with Fed 210 primers.

Im not pushing the 155s too hard at 2835 with 45.0gr RL15....however your charge will
likely not be the same ...work your way up like normal for best results gamc.
Your seating depth will also need to be worked up as your chamber dims aint the same as mine.
Im running a Krieger 4 grove 12 twist Heavy Varmint at 27 1/2 inches.
Im jumpin them .083 with Lapua Palma brass and CCI 450s

That is in line with my thinking ,that should be a laser in my 12 twist Atkinson barrel just trying to get a velocity charge ratio based on your experience
Thanks

Think I have 4 on the go at the moment. Always thought a cartridge wasnt worth owning if it couldn't break 3000fps but target shooting gave me a new respect for the 308. Just so accurate, versatile and reliable. Here is one I put together myself. Rem 700 untouched, HS stock devcon bedded, Palma barrel with 2500 rounds through it cut back to 20", standard trigger and a Leupold 4.5-14x50. Nothing fancy at all but something well balanced, light enough to carry but heavy enough to be pleasant to shoot.

125gr nosler BTs at 100. 5 shots on the paper during load testing. 5 shots on the card is cold clean bore group.

Isn't that just such a rewarding feeling?! Go plain vanilla build and shoot bug holes!
I built this last week. I had an under gassed situation that made it shoot terrible. Drilled out the gas port 2 thou and runs like a champ now with 168 FGMM. I would love to make up some 125gr TTSX or BTs, or Hammer Bullets 124gr hunters and see how it do.
