looks like the New 223 is Working

Ok,

I had an new bbl placed on the Barnard 223 action. A 32 inch Rock Creek, 7.2 twist. Load testing today reveled that 2000MR is the go powder for now. Mol'yd Berger 90VLD and 27.8 grs of powder. Tula SRM primer and LC brass. I have not chrony'd the load, but I am going gather that it may be around the 2950 range. I will know more when I run it over a chrony. I do not feel that the load was near max, but I would not doubt that another half grain or so would have produced the pressure point.

Sweet! If you don't mind me asking... what chamber do you have in that critter, and how much freebore?

Re: looks like the Nnew 223 is Working

Don't know the freebore number, but I can tell you what I am using for a seating depth. Base to ogive is 2.067, the chamber is a Wylde chamber, throated to keep the 90's out of the donut area.

Re: looks like the Nnew 223 is Working

How about OAL, base to tip? Base to ogive doesn't mean much if I don't have the same comparator handy.

Re: looks like the Nnew 223 is Working

I was able to hold 1/3 moa today at 600 yards. That shooting prone with sling and irons.

Re: looks like the Nnew 223 is Working

Oh and this is the Second 223 with the 90's. The old bbl was pulled, set back an inch after 2200 rounds. It is now on a Remington action instead of the Barnard. Shoots the same load that it shot last year, which was 25.0 grs RL15, excepth this year I am using LC brass instead of Lapua. I don't I will ever spend the money for Lapua 223 brass again.

Re: looks like the Nnew 223 is Working

I think your estimated speed may be a little high but i could be wrong, if it is I would think your brass will have loose primer pockets,I know Lapua brass would be loose, I understand the Lake City is beefier around web area.
Lets us know on speed and how lake city stands up

Daaaang... I don't think I have any left-overs sitting around, and not sure if my notes have survived (didn't shoot any .223 last year, and none so far this year due to other priorities), but thats at least 0.100" longer, probably 0.150" longer than I recall with my factory 'Wylde' chamber. Yeah, I can see where you could zorch those puppies outta there with that much increase in volume!

Re: looks like the Nnew 223 is Working

Indeed, the one thing that makes this work so well is getting the bullet up out of the case. You need the volume to make it work. I feel that several that have tried this project, did not throat the chamber enough.

This bbl is my third bbl chambering with this set up and it works. Anyone that wants to do this kind of project, would benefit from everything that I have posted here on this site about doing this. This combo does infact really work!

I will shoot it in the up coming 3X600 match at ORSA, if it prevails then as well as it did yesterday, then I will set the bbl'd action aside and save it. The old bbl is shooting really well right now.

Re: looks like the Nnew 223 is Working

Do you have a special reamer for this setup, or is it throated long after being chambered with a Wylde reamer?

I wouldn't be surprised at the MV. I ran my original barrel 223 at 2,910 fps ~15 ft ahead of the muzzle with a 31-inch True-Flite and 25.2gn Re15, but that was with 'naked' 90gn Berger VLDs and a slightly longer freebore (2.690-2.715" COAL over the life of the barrel).

With the moly'd bullets and a slightly slower burning powder, plus an extra inch of barrel, 40 more fps seems perfectly feasible. It's as always down to individual barrels of course as to what they allow.

FWIW, I still use my original Lapua Match brass, some getting on for 10 firings although they were relegated to less heavy loads after six full-house Re15 outings. Apart from one or two cases that were overloaded in load development, I've yet to scrap a single case.

For those uninitiated in the ways of the 223 at this sort of performance level, you MUST have enough freebore to suit these needle shape bullets, and you CANNOT replicate the 90gn Berger VLD loads or performance with the LRBT version of the bullet which generates significantly higher pressures. (I note Berger has withdrawn the LRBT model which is a shame as I love it for 200-600yd F/TR matches.)

Re: looks like the Nnew 223 is Working

Comparing my elevation against my 22BR, I believe that the load is running at around 2950 fps

I won't be doing any more testing with this rifle till after the Regional. But in the next Palma we have, I will be shooting this rifle then.
