I saw this tool home made on a post once
It uses a micrometer body on a collar that goes over the barrels threads ,touch’s the shoulder and measures off the back of a head space gauge for reaming a chamber

I've been considering one of these for use primarily on Remington 700 type actions. Can the PMA tool be used without the ball that's designed for coned actions? What is the purpose of the rectangular piece in jkohler's post, is it used to take up space inside the mic?

Yes for measuring HS. The ball is only used to duplicate cone breeches. The rectangular piece has nothing to do with this. Action fixture is my guess.

You can keep it simple.

That's the technique I use on some muzzles that include a tapered section behind the threads and barrels that have no shoulder.

I used a digital indicator for mine rather than a micrometer. Makes it very easy to simply zero out the indicator on the Guage of a previously chambered barrel, the cut to depth. I use a flat tip on he indicator and also made a piece that goes between the tip and the indicator stem. That allows me to use the same process cutting a cone to depth. I made mine a little different but just imagine a flat washer between the stem and the flat tip.

Oh, and I've seen these that screw onto the tenon. I prefer it to just slip over the threads.

Slip fit is best. Plan for oversize threads if you build one.

some are used-----the sleeve, depth mike and HS gage.

What I don't fully understand is how you use the coned device.
This device appears fairly simple to make but how do you use it
and how do you determine it's dimensions ?

Would appreciate any information.

He uses it as I do. It is to take a measurement from a known used barrel to bring the cone measurement on your new barrel to the same measurement.
