Looking for Headspace tool made buy someone on here

Very nice. Id make those windows about twice that big. It doesnt need to be strong but its nice to be able to move stuff around inside there

I'm not sure the ball idea is as good as what Butch and Jackie are using. Wouldn't the ball method be specific to the size of the chamber, and also dependent on making sure the headspace is spot on, whereas a measuring cone like they're using actually measures the depth of the cone based off the cone itself and not the diameter of the chamber.

They are only using it to compare a known measurement of another barrel that they are duplicating. I believe they are measuring a cone for clearance to the bolt nose.

The ball diameter matters. All you need is a datum that's larger than the back of the chamber.
But yes, if the ball is too small, it will only contact the chamber mouth and provide an irrelevant measurement.

I have used both and get a repeatable measurement every time with the ball. The cone trying to match up with the other cone takes some wiggling to get 2 measurements the same. I use a 1” ball because it zeroes out the 1” mic and fits all cones no matter the cartridge

But, a 1" ball isn't big enough for a say a dasher. I'm not sure you can get a ball big enough to measure off the cone without exceeding the tenon diameter. I'm not arguing by any means, just want to be sure I'm not missing something

I do the trig on the "back of an envelope" then verify in CAD. This is for a Panda with 308BF:

I always set my complete tenon up before i cut a chamber. I crushed a bunch of solder on every size boltface on mainstream actions to get my setup over the years. I still crush a lot of solder veryfying

The 1" ball works on 30° cones but mby not so much on 25° cones.

I was totally thinking of BAT's, I didn't consider the 30° cone of Kelbly. This is what I made for measuring cones, I always double check for clearance afterwards. Thats why I asked about the ball, I think it might be a little more precise

Not sure what you mean

Dusty, on a BAT the 1" ball sits on the corners of the chamber and not on the angle of the cone, I don't have a drawing as nice as Gene's but the attached pic explains it a lot better than I can word it. If you're looking to hit exactly .007 clearance on the Nose cone using the ball, you would have to have that measurement for each chamber that is different and also count on the headspace being 100%
