Long Range Caliber for AR Platform

My vote would be for the .224 Valkyrie or the new 6mmARC. I have shot one but not the other so.... thats my 2 cents. I also own a 6.5 Grendel but its a bolt rifle and it does really well but if long range is your game then chose one of the others as the Grendel is slow because of bullet weight. I'm getting 2500 to 2600 but I'm shooting a 26 inch barrel.

Hello All;

I have been doing a lot of reading on the net about choosing the right caliber with a lot of contradictions and... I am more confused now.

I am planning to build a long range precision AR rifle which will be solely used for targets and not hunting; I gave up hunting a long time ago. I would rather stay with the smaller frame AR15 but that is not a deal breaker. I know there are DPMS 308 Gen II which are smaller frame and POF Revolution AR10 which is the same size as AR15 (I don't like it since it is proprietary).

lots of people are recommending 6.5 Creedmoor which fit AR10. Is there any other caliber that would shoot flat, wind resistant... up to 1000m?

Thanks for any information.

I would look at a Gibbz G10 side charging matched upper and lower. Install a 24 inch Krieger 6.5x47 Lapua barrel, JP Enterprises HP BCG and Captured Recoil Spring and go to town. This set up will do everything you want to do and then some.

There is no secret sauce to get an AR accurate at 1000y. 15s are everywhere and any cartridge in a 15 is stretched at 1000. Are you a competition handloader?

Pic a 10 platform in 308 and go to the range. Getting that AR setup for 1000y will keep you busy. After that, you'll know what you want.

I have a 1000yd range in my backyard and very rarely shoot that distance anymore. Have more fun around 500 to 800yds. Love those AR rifles for different distance shooting. Currently have 2 Grendels, one in 24in and one 16in. Both will cut up at 1000yd. Very simple to find loads, both shoot the same load and that makes me happy. Sure a boltgun will be more accurate but it is hard to beat a fungun like an AR. There is a lot of long-range AR15 rifles to chose from, so my suggestion would be to choose a caliber that has a proven track record and make sure you get a quality barrel.
