Long Range Caliber for AR Platform

Hello All;

I have been doing a lot of reading on the net about choosing the right caliber with a lot of contradictions and... I am more confused now.

I am planning to build a long range precision AR rifle which will be solely used for targets and not hunting; I gave up hunting a long time ago. I would rather stay with the smaller frame AR15 but that is not a deal breaker. I know there are DPMS 308 Gen II which are smaller frame and POF Revolution AR10 which is the same size as AR15 (I don't like it since it is proprietary).

lots of people are recommending 6.5 Creedmoor which fit AR10. Is there any other caliber that would shoot flat, wind resistant... up to 1000m?

Thanks for any information.
I have an RRA LAR-8 in 260 Rem that I built that shoots extremely well... for what it is...better than a few of my bolt actions...I just don't like chasing the brass.

Might read this also...

.243 is a great round.

Seems like you used to could buy factory AR-10 rifles in .243 from DPMS or Armalite. But I have never seen one in the flesh, so maybe Im wrong.

I believe Rock River Arms still sells the A4 LAR 8 Varmint in .243. That would definitely be my first choice hands down.

You may get better ballistic performance out of a cartridge in the AR-10 platform, but have fun actually shooting better, consistently, with the added reciprocating mass, recoil, and gas from the AR-10 platform. Especially if you're shooting from any position besides bench or solid prone.

There are good cartridge options in the AR-15 platform to shoot at 1000 meters and beyond, especially if you reload and build with custom components. My favorite option so far; 6mm Grinch. Craddock Precision has a 6 Grinch reamer with a 0.276 neck and 0.100 freebore, which should be GTG for running magazine-fed in an AR-15 (haven't had time to install my new barrel from Craddock and work up a load yet to confirm; hopefully soon). The 'Grinch' is essentially necking down the 6.5 Grendel to 6mm and 'Dasher-izing' it. Other similar/same options are the 6mmAR Turbo40 or the 6mm Fat Rat, both supplied by guys with 'proprietary reamers':(... The first 6mmART40 upper/barrel I had pushed 105 hybrids at around 2840 fps and consistently grouped sub 1/2 moa with a 23" barrel.

Theres also the 6.5 Grendel necked down to 6mm with out blowing the shoulder out/forward, (as mentioned in a post above some options are 243 LBC, 6mm Grendel, 6mm AR, 6mm Predator). I have a 243 LBC upper with a 24" barrel. So far I've had better luck with 87 gr and 95 gr bullets than I have had with the heavies (105 - 108's) in this upper. Accuracy-wise it's nothing to write home about so far, but still shoots sub-moa. I'm pushing Berger 95gr Target VLD's at just under 3000 fps.

You might also look into the 22 Grendel. There just seems to be some accuracy 'magic' going on with Grendel case that would make me choose wildcats off of it verses something like the 22 Valkyrie. You can read a fair amount on this site about the 6 Grinch (shot from bench-rest bolt guns), being competitive against even the well known 6 PPC and 6 BR cartridges.

then tune the ejector and the gas system.
you can have them dropped at your feet. one of mine actually leaves the case in the ejection port.

Thank you and everyone else for such informative posts. I have learned so much from you guys in such a short time. I do have a lot experience shooting a few different cartridges (limited to those avavible in the army), but never really did so thinking about all these factors you guys work with.

6.5 grendel or the 6mmAR/grendel. I have an AR10, it will let you shoot the more powerful cartridges, but the grendel was designed for the AR15 and works great. Are you looking to target shoot for fun or competition? For fun on steel out to 1K or more, stick with the smaller platform and let er rip!

Look up Robert Whitley's website: 6mmar.com A lot of excellent information on making an AR15 shoot and on the 6mmAR cartridge. I shoot the 6.5 but they are both excellent long range choices. Don't know if you are a reloader yet or not, but another advantage of the 6.5 is factory ammo. and if you do reload, the 6mm is only a neck down operation, not all that fireforming, triming etc. crap.

I have an Aero Precision in 6.5 CM. I had one of my 12X42 Nightforce scoped on it when I was working you a load for it. I ended up shooting the Berger 140 VLD jumped .065". This gun/load consistantly shoots in the .3 to .4 range. I have only shot it out to 300 yards and only 400 rounds and needed the scope back on a BR rifle. Soon going to have another Nightforce to see what it will do further out. No for the nit pickers. I have been shooting, hunting and reloading for over fifty years. Back before some of you were born when some one asked you what caliber you were hunting with answered .270, .280, 06, .308 etc. It can be either or depending the questing.

One could always build their own version of the magnums 300saum works, so does 7mm. 'Cause that will get you digging through the grass over every piece of brass.

I’ve had a lot of different calibers in the gas guns. At 1000 yds among the best performers were the 243 lbc, 6mm fat rat, and 6br. The 6 turbo 40 would be great too. It’s hard to beat the 6mm cartridges for overall performance. The recoil is low and the 105bergers and 107 sierras shot well in my fat rat and 6br. Hard to beat that combination although my favorite ar right now is a ArmaLite ar10T compass lake built 260.
I’d think an ar10 In 6xc or 6x47 would be awesome though. The 6xc is my next project.

I have a DPMS AR10 LR .260. It's a bull barrel model with a 24" barrel. It has a JP 2 stage trigger and shoots as well as most of my bolt 6.5s do. I think it would fit your needs. Not sure today how easy they'd be to find considering everyone is buying up guns and ammo

At what altitude are you at to stay supersonic to 1800?

Good Morning!

My charts have been set for 400' ASL and about 80 degrees F because that's where I was shooting and it rarely went below 80 degrees except maybe for an hour or two early in the morning.

I have been shooting, hunting and reloading for over fifty years. Back before some of you were born when some one asked you what caliber you were hunting with answered .270, .280, 06, .308 etc. It can be either or depending the questing.

Well Frank, sorry to tell you but you are wrong. I don't care what age you are or how long you've been shooting or reloading. The fact is that you're using the wrong term by definition alone. Your attitude about the acceptance of the casual misuse of the English language is contributing to the poor communication habits of our fellow shooters. So no matter what your opinion is, how old you are or how much you reload, the definitions of these two terms are finite not just some casual misuse.

Have a great day! It's beautiful here.:)

Well I have seen the All Guard Team Shoot some Big Scores with there AR 10's in .308.
They shoot 175 Bergers ?? and 20"Barrels ?

What would a 26" Barrel and move the Gas System 2" forward do ?
