I just want to scream. HHELP me.

Here is the situation. I got a Rem 700 .308, scope etc. Started shooting 8 months ago at paper targets. (100 yards). Started reloading, Yes I have the sickness. I can kill paper like no tomorrow. Sick of the local cowboy ranges. Would like to get involved with local's that hunt/shoot.

2 clubs in Houston that can shoot over 100 yards. Both are closed to new members.

I want to shoot 200-1000. Maybe competition? I want to learn from others.

Any comments would be helpful.

You don't have to be a member to shoot matches at Bayou Rifles. Also, American Shooting Center goes out to 500 yards and it's a public range.

Even better. Having not been out there in a long time, do they allow steel targets or are there pits at 600 yards?

If you are going to shoot in ANY matches whatsoever IN Houston, then you have no choice but to shoot at Bayou Rifles. It is the ONLY place in Houston that has 600 and 1000 yards.

Go to the BAYOU RIFLES web-site and look for the "How do I become a member" portion to sign up. Additionally, you do NOT need to be a member to shoot at competitions. Go to the CLUB CALENDER to see when they are. BUT it works like this: 1000 yards is held on the FIRST Sunday of every month. AND on the THIRD Sunday, you have (alternately month by month) either 300 or 600 yard competitions.

There is some donated steel hanging down there, bring some paint. I believe the hangers are still there if you want to hang your own steel or paper as well. No pits, also bring some boots as its a mud pit out in front of the targets...

Otherwise just hit Bayou's LR/MR matches and/or squadded practices when they have them...

Just come to the next match and shoot, we shoot almost every weekend your gun will be most suited for F-TR LR and MR, the next match is 3/1 come on by and give the 1000 a try, make sure you have a good zero at 300 or 600, we will help you get to the 1000, also make sure you are loading 175 or heaver bullets 168 factory loads have a hard time getting down to the 1000, a lot of guys shoot the 155's but they are pushing more fps than any factory loads. Hope to see you on the first, FYI, w have a squadded practice the Saturday before the match 2/28 from 1230 until done, that is the best place to get your zero at 1000 and anyone can shoot members or non-members, I would highly recommend coming you will be way head on Sunday it you do.

I would STRONLY suggest that the OP come to a 300 match before even thinking of coming to a 600 or 1000 match. There is somewhat of a steep (but short) learning curve is he's never shot a match AND never shot his equipment past 100 yards.

Last year Bayou gave a one day introduction to competition along with a wind clinic and we had over 50 people attend. This is where we teach how to pull targets (a critical aspect of competition) and also about range commands and the reasons behind every item in the safety briefing. At 300 yards, at least he will be able to get on target fairly quickly and not have to disturb the line and the pits.

After a few of those, a visit to the 600 yard line is a lot easier on everyone. And I agree with Erik, attending the "Handloading for competition" class is a great way to learn what's required to be in the game at long range.

I will be calling the next 300 yard match in March at Bayou, BTW.
