Light class cartridge.

I have a defiance deviant LA Mag bf & hawk hill .30 10twist barrel. Thinking of building a lightweight class elr gun so -26 lbs. Can't do a 300 NM with a mag bolt face, thinking maybe a .308 baer possibly a .300 prc ? Give me your opinion on these 2 or some others worth looking at

My definition of true ELR, starts at 2k. At 2k and beyond, the 30 cals aren't a good choice. Your 10-twist is too slow for the 245/250 grain bullets, so another strike against the 30 cal.

I think for ELR you should start with the bullet and work into the cartridge. The 300 grain Berger has a great BC. Why not a 338 Edge or Edge Improved? It has great case capacity and doenst require a LM bolt face. I am in the same boat and am going that route. I have a 30-28 Nosler that is a lazer but from 1,500 yards and further my buddies 338 out shoots it every time.

Can't you get a Lapua bolt face bolt for that action?

Your gonna want to ditch that 10 twist barrel

I have two 338s and am considering the 300 NM Improved on my Defiant, the heavy 30s are real close to the 300g Berger if you can get them up too speed

Both very valid points, here on the east coast that's relatively local to me the farthest range is 2400 and I can't say I'm looking to win period but I would like to be apart of it an experience the game with what I currently have on hand.. thanks that's what I'm looking for, opinions!!

If your going to limit yourself to what you have on hand you may consider a 300PRC. They do pretty good out to the ranges you have access to. Your 10 twist barrel will limit you to a lighter than optimal bullet but you can really push them hard with Lapua brass more so than the other brands. That Defiant action will take the beating and hopefully you will too. Good Luck

I just picked up a baity lrm action, krieger 1:10, 1.25 straight @ 28” 30 nosler for my light gun. I’m going to try the Berger 230 otm’s. I built a 300 wsm with a 9 as my elr trainer have taken it out past 2k using 215’s. Thing is a laser out to 2k past that it’s hit or mis pun intended. Think I would sell that 10 twist and get a 9 myself.

We shot, I shoot, a tight neck 300 PRC for years in 1K comps prior to the adoption of the 300 PRC. A 1-10 stabilizes a Sierra 240 so I would think it would work for all but the heaviest 30 cal. bullets.
A Sierra 240 measures 1.600"
A Berger 230 is listed as 1.668" and recommended minimum twist of 1-10 per Berger's website.

3000+ with 265 or 285 solids

You are going to be limited to 200-215 bullets with that 10 twist. My suggestion is save that 10 twist for 308 ftr build or a 300 wsm/300 saumimp 1k build.

An 8.5 twist in 300 prc or 30 nosler shooting 230 atips and 230 sierras can stay super to 2k+ yards. That would be my suggestion for mag bf 30 cal elr rig. lapua makes prc and peterson/adg makes 30 nosler.
