Leupold VX-3 opinions

I’m looking at buying a leupold VX-3 in 4.5x14 for my 6mm hunting rifle.
I’ve had a few leupolds over the years and still have a few but never a die hard fan.
This VX3 is 300.00 nib.
Is it a good deal? Is it a good scope?

I have 2 of them. Excellent scope. Even better when I had the reticle changed out to the Varmint Hunter reticle.

If you’re going to sight it in and leave it alone, it’ll be just fine.

I would NOT torque your rings to 18-20 inch lbs though. It can handle 14-15.

I hunted with vx3 for years and beat the crap out of it. Think I sold it for 300 6 years ago. Still worked great.

I don’t have experience with that exact model, but my vx-3HD has been very reliable. I also have a VX-III that went bad, but Leupold fixed it without any hassle. $300 is a steal for that scope

I shoot a certain local Australian service style match at 100, 200 and 300m twice a month. Once during the day and another weekend at night with the targets illuminated by small rechargeable work lights.

One of the rules is 4x magnification max for optics. A variable scope set and taped at 4x is acceptable.

I started with a VX3HD and it was great during the day. At night it was pretty much useless for me. I could not resolve the target clearly. I swapped to a NF SHV 4-14 and could easily resolved the targets at night. With a good moon the NF is usable without the target illumination but the 3HD is not. Day time performance for both scopes on 4x were similar.

If I didn't shoot at night I would never have noticed. I have sold the Leupold. I think the VX3HD make decent day time optics but that is all.

YMMV - I'm 55 years old and wear glasses. Everyone is different.

300.00 is a good price for that scope, good scopes. Just make sure you check the condition. Look for scratched lens, dents in the tube, finish blemishes, obvious stuff but a lot of guy don’t check out the condition of the lens before they buy.

One other thought, Leupold scopes have been counterfeited with more regularity in the past 2-3 years, it’s bad enough that Leupold encourages you to call them with the serial number so they confirm it’s actually legit. I don’t worry about it if I know the seller, if I don’t I always call and make sure it’s actually a Leupold.
