Let's see your lasers

30 Watt is more than enough. You could cut the barrel in half, if you had enough time. Watts = how long it will take.

Also, smaller size lenses really change how fast it "cuts".

If I'm doing anything flat, yes.

If I'm doing a large logo on a barrel (I have some guys that want 1 inch round logo) - I need the 225 to get enough focal depth to wrap around the barrel

Buddy got a new 22 Creedmoor barrel and asked me if I could laser anything he wanted on the barrel. I reluctantly said yes. My friends, well…they’re my friends :D

I actually thought he did good:

I did talk him into letting me mark it correctly underneath. We did get a laugh over thinking about someone walking into a store asking for 22 Chingon ammo :p

Fume extractors can be had, but they're expensive. If you can vent out a window, many people just use an inline duct fan of some sort.

I recently bought one of the low end 20W ComMarker fiber lasers. They’ve dropped quite a bit in price (now $1499) so thought I’d try one. This one is not MOPA. I mainly want to mark metals and understood this is supposed to be capable of that.

I made a simple v-block cradle to screw to the relatively small platform, to support the barreled action out past its CG. I marked my first barrel today using the default laser settings of the EZCAD2 that came with the unit. The lower line of text was made with 75 passes (about 5mins)). The upper row (just my initials) was done with 25 passes. I haven’t done any cleaning of the marked area as of yet. Use 2000grit wet/dry maybe?image.jpegimage.jpeg

I’m open to any advice you more experienced laser folks can offer. The unit came with unmarked glasses. I read some people elect to buy certified ones. This laser‘s wavelength is 1064nm. Is there a specific protective set of glasses/goggles that you’ve found to be good?

I saw someone review that laser after I bought mine. It looks like it does a fine job, no better than mine. I don't wear the glasses... I also don't stare into the laser.
