Went to the reloading room in my basement this morning with the intent of full length resizing a hundred 270WSM pieces of brass. Set the resizing die as usual to cam over a bit to set the shoulder back just a bit.

Put my first piece of brass in and lowered the handle until the die touched the shoulder of the brass. Went to remove the piece of brass and it wouldn't come out because the spent primer was not fully ejected. Went through all of the initial set up moves again but the primer was still stuck halfway out of the brass. Called Redding and asked for someone to call me back. The technician just called and I explained my problem, I was certain it was a defective die. The Tech explained to me that the problem wasn't the die. The primer rod was too short. I thought all rods were the same. I found out today that the rods vary in length depending on which die you are using. Somewhere several months back I must have grabbed a primer rod from another die when the one I was using broke.

I never knew the primer rods vary in length depending on which die set you have. So the next time you break a primer rod just don't grab one from another die. Chances are your putting the wrong length rod in your sizing die.

Almost all sizing die stems are longer than needed and you screw the stem down till the primer pin is about 3/8 inch below the mouth of the die. Then tighten the stem nut to lock in place.

Dont get it too long or itll swage the primer pocket the wrong way. Ask me how i know that!

Another reason I like a universal decapping die set. Take all them die stems out of my dies, dont need em.

Each deprimer rod needs to be adjusted for your particular cartridge case. I screw the rod down until the primer drops out then give the rod 1 or 2 more turns. If you do it this way it's unlikely that the pin holder will bottom on the case head.

Yes, the primer rod in a .17 Fireball die is a lot shorter than one in a 7mm mag for example. The quick fix for this is use a dedicated decapping die.
