Lapua Long Range 22 ammo and Super Long Range

I also wonder what size is the target? at 300yds. 12x12, 24x24, 36x36? and what is the goal just to hit it?

Lee
300 isn't a big deal, even 400 but getting out towards 500 Mother Nature and other factors start to override an acceptable degree of repeatable accuracy. I'll have to see it in action to believe it's something better than their available stock. Might be hyped advertising for a higher profit margin.

12" tombstone shaped target on left side at far treeline, larger one on far right is full size IPSC for comparison.

I had hit two in a row and told Chris we needed to film it, no one would believe it. Then 3 more in a row, missed two then another hit. Chris got two more in a row which made 8 for 10. Wind changed slightly and that ended the hits. Under right conditions it's surprising what they can do.

The bullet becomes unstable when going subsonic. That is why the match ammo is all subsonic.
I used to believe this too until I found a batch of cci velocitor which shows outstanding accuracy out past 200 yards have not been able to find a so-called match ammo yet they can match it only thing it suffers from is more windage because it's a more rapidly slowing down projectile but I don't buy the transonic thing for Rimfire .
I totally agree with post 18

So, the goal is just to be able to hit it? and I have to believe conditions need to be very good. the day I was shooting at 300 it was near perfect.
another shooter who was shooting an AR came over to see what I was shooting he thought at first it was a suppressed CF nope just my H & R M12 FYI, I didn't aim at the plate but rather walked them in and once I figured the hold about 25 ft left and about 50-60 ft up I just started to shoot, ammo was SKPM and Lapua PK

There's something about it in the daily bulletins. BC is exactly the same as the rest of their bullets. If it's tighter ES, why didn't they just do that with their current offerings. I'm curious if it's better or if it's a marketing thing.
Lapua brought out Biathlon Xtreme in about 2018/19 with an 1106 fps mv rating. It has disappeared from their online catalog just about the time that these new offerings came out. My guess is that there was more room for growth in a "long range" product line market, than in a second Biathlon line. It won't surprise me if it's essentially the Biathlon Xtreme product rebranded, grade sorted, and up-priced.

BTW, Mile High still has Biathlon Xtreme in stock for ~$145 a brick.

I went to the Lapua test center a couple of years ago. Sat through the test sequence and saw a trend of my rifles preference for faster lots. I ended up with 3 cases of BiathlonX. At 400 yards, the difference between Center x and the BiathlonX is huge as far as come ups.

Match ammo is standard velocity (generally around 1050 - 1080 fps) because slower ammo is less affected by wind than faster ammo. In short, the faster the .22LR ammo, the worse it does in the wind.

It was confirmed in 1990 by Robert McCoy that .22LR ammo with transonic zone velocities (from about 890 fps to 1340 fps) doesn't suffer from the increased pitching and yawing that causes the flight instability associated with bullets slowing down into the transonic zone from considerably greater velocities. See conclusion #5, p.11 in Robert McCoy "AERODYANMIC CHARACTERISTICS OF CALIBER .22 LONG RIFLE MATCH AMMUNITION" https://apps.dtic.mil/dtic/tr/fulltext/u2/a229713.pdf

HV ammo is generally inaccurate because it's not made to the same standards as match ammo. If it were made to high standards, there's no reason to think it would be inaccurate because it's faster. Most HV .22LR ammo never have MVs that exceed transonic zone velocities.
That is an amazing and deeply comprehensive study. It's going to take a while to understand and digest even a little bit of it.
THANKS~!

I would be thrilled if they managed to run this ammo off of a new/different/expanded production line so that the traditional match ammo isn’t gobbled up for long range steel tapping.
Spoke with Shane at Lapua East yesterday.

Plus side: LR and SLR are basically CenterX and Midas+ but loaded slightly hotter with a nominal speed of 1120fps. They come off of the same production lines in Germany and follow the same quality controls. My own testing has shown the LR and SLR can shoot very well at any distance in the match grade 22 rifles I’ve tested it in.

Minus side: New production equipment hasn’t been added so any production of LR and SLR comes as a reduction in CenterX and Midas+ production. LR and SLR has been performing quite well but there isn’t currently enough of it yet to include it in the test center options. Lapua is not cranking up the machinery to go faster so that quality stays where it has been.

My opinion, if you’re a long range shooter with a test center appointment, ask about LR and SLR but don’t get your hopes up about getting it by way of the test center. Buy what you can afford if you find it in the normal retail channels.

This is all subject to change as there is a cargo container arriving from Germany every five weeks or so.

What would a short 45-47 gr bullet at 1080 fps or just under the speed of sound do to help the long range (300-400 yds ) accuracy? I’ve shot alot of 200+ 300 yd
The drop is a constant , the wind , well you learn fast , but a heavier bullet should help.

my understanding is that Mark Del Cotto is was using SK Long Range at the NRA Nationals
His Bleiker is on the "braggin board" at Lapua East. It shot a 10-shot 50m group of 9.7mm outside-to-outside. It said the ammo was "Customer". Wonder if that's the ammo and rifle?

Still awesome Mark..
I had changed tuners to get a longer sight radius so I needed to "tune" the new tuner. I brought my best lot of M+ to set the baseline data on the upta tuner. After running the tuner up and back, the best setting was around 100 on the tuner. On a 100 setting, the first 10 shot - 50m group was actually 8.65mm BUT the 100m group was strung a bullet and a half wide but vertically near 29mm. (How that can happen is beyond me) I then tried the tuner at .9875 (1/4 turn back) and it got better but going a 1/4 turn the other way resulted in a 9.7mm at 50m and an 18-19mm groups at 100m. So I quit playing with the tuner and then tested some M+ and Xact.

Watching the better shooters at my longrange matches switching over to SLR has consistently added 3-5 targets each match. That is about what those of us using ammo such as SK Biathlon and others in that price range are dropping. I spot for each shooter and can see the better consistently on the distant targets with SLR, LR and Midas.

It may be hard to notice when watching average shooters but there is definitely an improvement. The rounds that we'd call a flier is closer to the group size instead of dropping in under the target or going over. Is it worth it? Depends on if you want to be at the top or content with knowing you are giving up a couple of targets for each box used.
