Lapua .22 Rimfire Long Range and Super Long Range

I'm getting ready to start measuring to the first drive band myself, but, in my thinking, the rim thickness is so close, within tenths of a thousandth, (on same box/lot # ammo) that I'm going to try using a regular caliper comparator and measure from base to front drive band, at least initially, to see how it goes.
You could measure from the back of the base to the driving band. the main thing is getting a consistent reading. the G3 gauge comes with a test pin so you can always check that you are getting consistent readings.
IMO if we are relying on the case length to always be consistent to measure off the front of the rim, I see no problem with using the base/back of the case.

Hey Danny, when did you get that case.. was it one of the first lots to hit the shores or a more current flavor like what i just got?
Wasn't a case...picked up a brick each of SLR and LR last November, so it must have been an early production. Lot # for the LR is 504001. I gave the balance of the SLR brick to my friend Dan P. up at Attebury to try out because he kindly shared his wind vane with me! So I can't list that lot #. Sorry.

Dan is a great guy

pretty much got the same results today Danny.. but what i found was that the slightest change at 100 really affected the bullet..
at 100 yds the wind drift with SLR going 1100 fps is .01 MOA greater than with 1060 speed ammo....imperceptible to us iron sight shooters

@dannyjbiggs
I think that I finally solved the problem with elevation

This first target was shot with SK Pistol Match Special

This next target was shot with Lapua Long Range

Wind was coming in at around 330 and would let off, pick up and let off. Had to watch for a tail wind though, it would kill ya, as I learned on the first target

no Tim.. nothing like that at all.. looks just like any other typical Lapua bullet.. no dimple at all..
So the question remains, what’s up with this bullet that so far is “ under the radar”?

P.S. one of the EU shooters on another site indicated this also sports a funky type of boat tail.

I assume nothing that hit US shores yet?

well maybe i will get around to pulling one of them apart..

Lapua bullets on CX, M+, and X-Act look like the one below. Don't know if "dimple" is the right word to describe it, but there's a feature on the bullets.

From almost directly above.

i bet that is from the process of where they lube the bullet

or from the punch that seats the bullet?

i don't see that on mine

EDIT: I now see it, but for me to see it, it took a magnifying glass to see it.. i think more now.. that it is from the punch that seats the bullet

No such force is required, the bullet slips in easily and then crimped. It is put there on purpose.

There is no dimple and it's not on purpose. My guess...It's a byproduct of the assembly process.

Left to right on each picture.

I think you are correct in that it is something from when they produce the bullet. IMO if it from the seating die or from swagging to form the bullet from the lead wire. in any case it's been there since at least 2013.
