Lapua .22 Rimfire Long Range and Super Long Range

no.. driving band to face of rim
I'm getting ready to start measuring to the first drive band myself, but, in my thinking, the rim thickness is so close, within tenths of a thousandth, (on same box/lot # ammo) that I'm going to try using a regular caliper comparator and measure from base to front drive band, at least initially, to see how it goes.

FWIW, this is how SLR and LR tested for me out of a Vudoo S at 50 and 100 yards in 10-shot groups a few months ago. The second pic is from a club match using the LR. While I could see little difference between the two at 50 yards, the LR was more accurate than the SRL at 100 yard testing, so LR got to shoot in the club match! Ammo was out-of-the-box, unsorted.

What happened with the 9? Did the wind get you? Anyway nicely done and thanks for sharing. I might have to give the SLR and LR a try.

pretty much got the same results today Danny.. but what i found was that the slightest change at 100 really affected the bullet..

For reference the following numbers were used to denote ammunition groupings after being measured
47,48 and 49 on the gauge
First target 47

Number 48

Number 49

Second 49

One thing that this tells me is that the rifle does like the shorter ammo. Also the third group of ammunition seemed to be more susceptible to the wind. Just couldn’t get it to shoot as good as the other two sets of sorted ammunition.

The lot of Long range I have has over 85% that are within 0.005. with the digital indicator I use that is 0.700-0.705 I would get 3 boxes+ out of 5 with another group 0.690-0.695 for about 50-70rds. less than 30 rds. that were in the 0.710-715 and some 0.680-0.725 (8-10 rds.) this last group is where I saw the high and low shots come from.

FYI, Super Long range I tested had better numbers but at over $5+ more per box I passed on it.
Your observation with slight wind changes is what I have seen at 50yds too. a little more patience for the conditions is what I found works for me.

I posted this target before but here is an example of how it is more sensitive to conditions changes. somewhat embarrassing to shoot a 19X but only a 245 score. but it still shot rather flat. this was done using the test lots I got. first time shot. decent club ammo IMO

let off's getting ya on that one?

Yup, that is my weak condition to shoot in. I can shoot in just about any other but when it is constant high and low that is also low wind strength, I do get caught a lot.

my buddies in AZ look at me strange when the day before a match I always say I hope it is windy and cold tomorrow.

for me this time out.. it was reversals.. did see them till it was already too late, the range is not kind to you.. esp winds coming out of the left.. from the firing point to about 25 yards out.. it is flat.. then it rises up to the 50 yard line about 3 feet in a grade.. then after the 50 yard like.. there is a severe drop off back down 3 feet and then it starts to rise again out to the 100 yard line.. any wind that comes in from the 8-11 quadrant will kill you..

So, I happened to pick up a Rimfire Precision mag today which had a typical BS magazine test on Lapua LR.
Among the pictures without comment was a clear picture of the nose which although is round has a distinct dimple not unlike ELEY. What’s up with that?

I'm reading this thread with some anticipation - one of my favorite ammo supply guys sent me a list of the remaining lots of Lapua LR from the last shipment he received, and I took a chance and bought a half-case of LR to try in my Vudoo & Rim-X rifles. Headed out in a few minutes to see what I find out...hope I didn't blow almost $800 on something that doesn't shoot at least as good as the last case of SK Rifle Match I got from him...

Don’t know what you are talking about but there isn’t any “dimple” on the bulletimage.jpg

"no.. driving band to face of rim"
What do you call the 'face' of the rim, the part of the rim nearest to or farthest from the bullet?
I do not see these even offered anymore. Tried to find instructions - no luck.
the side nearest to the bullet

Hey Danny, when did you get that case.. was it one of the first lots to hit the shores or a more current flavor like what i just got?

Tim, Both the LR and SLR had no dimple. if I was to switch the box and put a tray from them into a CX or Midas+ box you wouldn't be able to tell the difference. not sure why RP magazine would be showing something different.

Interesting concept. Since they are no longer produced, I guess people preferred to spend that $150 on (higher) quality ammo.
I believe Gerry the maker has passed away. I been using one since 2015, I used it mainly at first to check for the OAL of new lots. and see if they were within the OAL that my rifles like. I do use the Nevius chamber which is specific on engraving length. but since current lack of ammo, I been using more and more for actual sorting.

The tool is not a complicated design IMO the cup that rests against the driving band is the key part that needs to be machined with tight tolerances. also, the spring that returns the cup the zero position needs to be light enough, so you won't damage the bullet but still be able to return the cup to the same spot.
