Just how good are Douglas Barrels ?

Back in the early 70's I bought a pre-WWII model 70 Winchester chambered in .220 swift from an estate sale.. It had been rebarreled by Mr. Womack of Shreveport, LA with a heavy barrel from Douglas that was marked Timken Steel. This was my first experience with a super accurate rifle in that it was capable of 3/4 inch groups at 300 yards. I wish I still had it.

In just a few shorts weeks, I know have in my possession a very old , as new 40X in 7.62 Nato. It arrived today and of all great days, Veterans Day. God Bless our Veterans !!!!!!

I will post pics as soon as I get her back together, and let me just say, when my barreled action was sent back, it was packed in a Douglas Barrels shipping container that was more secured than my home safe. I could not believe what I had seen in a packing container. After 74 years in the barrel making arena, not only can they make great barrels, but they got to be the best home made shipping containers. I guess you learn a few tricks after 74 years.

Thanks again to Douglas Barrels, Mr. Stan Taylor and crew.

Got her back together. Thanks go out to Mr Taylor and crew at Douglas Barrels. She is a very nice old 40X.

I need to thank all of the forum members for their help in there recommendations as well as the support from the forum members. This is one of the absolute best forums going for the accuracy game. I am proud of her and will get her broken in per Douglas's recommendations. I will post the results here. I think I will be very satisfied with the results. I have both 168's as well as 175's to try.

Thanks to all,

Tom

About 54 or 55 years ago awhile in college I went to an area club that advertised a benchrest shoot. I had a Rem 722 in .244 I had shot out hunting groundhogs and had recently replace with a Douglas, again in .244. I found a large crowd including, I was told, several big time shooters from the Pittsburg area. When the match was about ended someone suggested one more target but not shot for group, but
closest to center. I had my girlfriend along and asked if I could buy her a target. Laughing, they said sure, more money in the pot. Well, she won and it wasn't really close. I knew then those Douglases were wonderful barrels.

Jeff I don't know what barrels you are shooting today but I know you are kicking ass on those closest to center targets. Lol
