Just how good are Douglas Barrels ?

Mr. JimPag, I would be glad to send my action to the barrel maker of your choice to have your choice of barrel installed for me if you are willing to pay for it for me. Sounds like a great donation to my LEO retirement fund. But, since I chose Douglas and I am paying for it, I guess I will be taking the chance on my dollar. Win or loose, I am excited to get my old 40X up and going.

Thank you Sir for your opinion, but it will either be my win or loss. Will keep you all posted either way. Again, something is missing in this case ? Just a old LEO gut feeling.
Like I mentioned, I shoot SR score at least 3 weekends a month from April till the end of October on the IBS circuit. If I had a 40X like u and wanted to play around with it and it had a Douglas barrel on it I would have no problems fooling with it but since I travel thousands of miles to compete against other guys, the last aftermarket barrel that I would have on any of my 28 custom action, custom built short range bench guns is a Douglas. They are just not competitive in SR score or group and whether or not you want or don't what to hear this it's the truth and that's a fact! Anybody in this game that I play will tell you the same damn thing.

Will do and really looking forward to it.

As to Mr JimPag, I thanked you for your opinion and tried to be courteous in your bitching about Douglas Barrels. I understand that you are disgruntled and do not like Douglas Barrels. My only fault in this is that I asked for opinions. By doing that, I know that their are folks like you, but get over it. Or as you stated in a past bitch session, carry it to the grave. As I posted in the past, if you are paying for my barrel, then you can bitch all you want. You are not paying for it and your opinion no longer matters in "my rifle". I am glad that you are as good as you think you are and that you think your opinion matters. You made your point and it really does not matter anymore, just look at the numbers who likes Douglas, then their is you.

In all of your travels and all of your 28 custom rifles, you still are not the national champion, but why ? But buy the numbers you stated of your custom rifles and thousands of miles your traveled, it really does "NOT" look as if Douglas held you back. You will always be pissed off at Douglas and it is obvious you will hold a grudge towards Douglas Barrels. I don't shoot IBS and don't care to. I am a working class guy that has dealt with your type in Law Enforcement for over 27 years. I can't help that your feelings may be hurt and this sets your IBS blood boiling. Your argument is not with me because I chose Douglas Barrels, and I would appreciate that you move on. Your argument is with Douglas Barrels because Douglas did not kiss your tale, when you did not get your way.

If you let the frustration go, you will score better at your next IBS match where ever it may be and with one of your 28 custom, non Douglas barreled rifles. You are a good enough shooter, it is all in your mind now.

As I said in the past, thank you for your opinion and "Peace be with you". Don't hate me because I am spending money with Douglas Barrels and am thankful to Mr. Taylor and the Douglas crew. Be free Sir !

Man you are something else Barney Fife with your over 27 years of law enforcement. I did the law enforcement gig in the 80's till I smartened up and decided that there are way better ways of making a living than putting up with all the general public idiots out there. I do not hate anyone for using a Douglas barrel. Get a grip on yourself. I don't care if Douglas barrels did not take care of me and I didn't ask them too. I sent it back because Stan Taylor offered to check it out for me. I didn't want a replacement barrel because I have hundreds of them now. He offered to make me a replacement barrel at no charge after he told me that at first that he talked to the owner and he said that he wouldn't do anything about it because I wasn't the first owner. Then Stan told me he would make one for me on his own and I guess he did but he wanted to send me the new blank and he was going to keep the barrel I sent him which I know of no other barrel maker who would do that because I know plenty of guy's who went thru the same thing that I did and they got a new blank and their barrel back from a few other different barrel makers. Again I don't have any gripe with Douglas barrels as a whole. They make a decent barrel but not one that can compete in the game that I play. If you can't comprehend what I'm saying, quit spending money on firearm related stuff and pay to go back to school and take some lessons on comprehension because it's obvious you still cannot comprehend what I've said. As far as shooting goes, go look on the IBS website where I stand. I hold my own when it comes to matches.

Well since you don't shoot benchrest you have no idea about the reputation of Douglas barrels both in SR group or score. I was in Keezeltown, VA two weeks ago sitting at the kitchen table with the best benchrest shooter on the planet. We were talking about Douglas barrels. I asked him if he ever used them and he said no. He said many years ago people use to use them but now nobody that he knew used them because according to him Douglas never kept up in the benchrest game. That's all he said and that's all I was saying.
Just curious this benchrest shooter in Virginia next time you chat with him ask if ever shot with Smiley L.Hensley .
This gentleman if he’s shot a longtime he may have remembered when this happened.

I have just picked up a old Rem 40x repeater with no barrel. I raise the question about Douglas simply because I would like to bring this old action back to what it was. It is early enough that it would have come from the Custom Shop with a chrome moly barrel and not stainless. Being a old W.Va. boy, I have always known of Douglas Barrels. The reason I am asking about Douglas, I know that they offer match grade barrels in CM. Just how good are they compared to Bartlein, Krieger, Brux, Schneider and Hart.

Just wanting the top accuracy from a CM barrel that this old gun produced new. The whole barreled action will have to be blued after completed. The easy way to go would just get a SS match barrel installed, but it did not come that way back in the early 60's. CM match barrels are limited. I have searched and have heard good and bad about Douglas. Like any barrel, it could be a good barrel, or wasted money. I can't afford the wasted money route. Any thoughts on the Douglas barrels would be appreciated. Plus, being a old W.Va. boy, there is a sense of loyalty to Douglas, but I want the best accuracy for the money I have to spend. I am a working class fellow that is now retired, so the funds are limited.

Thanks in advanced,

Tom

Thank you 1911nut, that is amazing. I probably have been one of thousands that have driven past the shop more times than I can count. I plan on stopping by someday. I love the history.

Always meant to ask this, Stan: Are you the same Douglas Barrels that made all those superb muzzleloader barrels back in the '70s? I built quite a few for friends using those barrels. Most were Hawken-style and I never found a single one that didn't have a mirror bore. Only name to use back then for the serious shooter.

Yes we still get calls for them but we no longer make them.

check internationalbenchrest.com for 2021 matches. Many more score shoots than group. Regarding the fellow who asked Pat about winning national championships, well I was at Weikert and he won a yardage, something I have not done in over 25 years. Winning at a national championship match is super tough to do. Anyone who has can crow about it in my book. One shouldn't ask such questioned without first determining the questioned recipient's curriculum vitae.

I would very much like to see some groups when you get the rifle back. Thanks!

I have my stock about ready for the new action.

That looks great. Looking forward to it is a understatement. I will have a very old (New) 40X. I can't give enough thanks to Stan Taylor and crew at Douglas Barrels for this projects completion in around 3 weeks. Unheard off in todays times. I should have her put back together before Thanksgiving. I wish the drive was not so far, I would make the drive and not have to ship. Can't wait to get this classic to the range. Also, I need to give a shout out to Chris Wasson for the gorgeous bluing that was done on this project.

Thanks also to all of the forum members for the input on choosing Douglas Barrels for this project.
