Is there a fur friendly 6 mm?

lol The one that won me the contest was 47.28. We get some good ones
I started out calling coyotes with my 243, back when pelts were pretty valuable. Back then there wasn't the selection of varmint bullets available that you could expect to "not exit". My fav was the little Sierra 60 gr HP, but it was about 50/50, and what a mess when it did exit. I bought a 222, and did a lot less sewing.

I'd like to commend you for saving pelts. I don't like leaving them lay, and I know the work involved.

And also HOLY CRAP!! WHAT A BEAR!! JD

Nice ! took the first one out while still moving
The threads the OP started on the other sites, he was wanting to build a night time gun for coyotes under 300 yards.

My responses in the past reflected that, because I have transitioned back to slow twists & lighter bullets for flatter point blank holds due to judging yardages at night w/o a rangefinder.

The pair above I shot with a 6x6.8 SPC & 70 Ballistic Tips at 3250. They do a fabulous job of dropping coyotes with zero external damage.

I’d say 17rem, 204, 22-250 and 6arc are what I’m narrowed down to… Maybe 243 for the easy Button
Is your smith ok with the 6mm ARC bolt face? If you go this path I would strongly consider a 9 twist as opposed to the 7.5 standard twist with your intentions in mind. Be fore warned the 9 twist would likely be to slow to allow any current Hornady factory ammo to shoot well in the 9 twist barrel. Perhaps 8 twist may be a better compromise with some factory ammo in mind.

Tough decision. narrow it down to the 204 Ruger or the 6mm ARC, then flip a coin. Heads you do the 204 Ruger & tails you skip the 6mm ARC:)

no issue there. He was actually very excited about building a 6 arc bolt gun with the intention of loading it a bit hotter and getting more out of it
If your intention is night hunting, I would suggest one of the 6mm’s. In my experience the 6’s just seem to anchor them better, especially with a marginal shot. I’m a big fan of 243 win but with powder prices going up I can see a 6 arc bolt gun in my future. If you have the option, use an action that you can change the bolt head on. Then you can re-barrel to any cartridge you may want to try in the future.

Going with a Solus most likely

If you want them DRT, use a rapidly expanding bullet and hope it doesn't exit.
If you want a nice pelt, use a FMJ and place your shots very carefully.
Like the old adage. Can't have cake and eat it too.

I won a coyote contest which awards me a custom rifle. I’ve been looking at 6 Creed and 6 ARC but I have no experience with 6mm. How many of you guys hunt coyotes with a 6mm? Currently, I’m a factory ammo shooter, but I’m going to be getting into hand loading this year as well.

I will never shoot more than 300 yards in my area

I’m trying to tow the line of dropping them like a sack of yams and keeping nice pelts.
There just aren't enough 6MM ARC reloading components out there yet, and when you do see them, which is rare, they are very pricey. .223 however can be found just about anywhere, and affordablr as well~!!

Not trying to argue, but some of the WORST holes I’ve ever seen came from hard ball ammo. Must be a lot of air in the nose of those suckers.
Interesting. They always punched a caliber specific hole for me, but perhaps I missed any bones causing yaw/tumbling. Or perhaps the twist rates/velocity were different enough to produce different results.
Been long enough I can't offer specifics.

The biggest CF on a coyote I ever had was with a FMJ out of my 22-250. My 1st & last time with those.

Am I missing something? What are you looking for in the way of components? Go back 2 years ago & I would have been in agreement regarding availability. Today products seem readily available pricing stinks compared to 5 years ago thoughI feel that is true across the board.

I’ll never hunt with FMJ so it ain’t worth discussing in this instance
I'd never consider one if I weren't thinking of pelt damage.
Might change my mind very quickly.
However, there's a good question in this discussion.
If FMJs are so destructive, why are tipped, hollow point of soft-lead bullets even offered?
