Fur friendly 243 load?

I have had great results with the 87 V-max out of my Dasher loaded to 3000 fps. Many times no exit. But, as with any bullet, shot placement is critical. I always hold behind the shoulder for broadside shots, or dead center if they are facing me. I personally would never consider using an FMJ.

I agree about the FMJ
Wouldn’t waste my barrel life on them let alone shooting them at any critters.

How far out are you shooting that you're not getting exits with a muzzle velocity of 3,000 FPS?

Gentlemen,
Has anyone used the Nosler 55 grain Varmageddons in a Ruger No.1a with any success?
Both in accuracy and fur damage?
Soup

I’ve had some luck with them shooting decent from different rifles.

I think if a guy was going to use them for coyotes you’d end up with quite a few “splashes”

The 87 vmax at 3070 out of a 20" 243 has been my goto for awhile. It can make a mess with gut shots but very often there is very little damage. The Hornady 87 bthp is stupid accurate and might be less violent.

Run the numbers, the 87 gives up very little drop to the light weights but the wind deflection is way better.

I have had luck, or been lucky with 70gr Matchking hollow points. About 30 or 35 dogs and never had a blow up. Mostly right through. Ironically my partner using a .223 with 69 gr Matching regularly has them blow up.

I've shot many coyotes with a lot of the common varmint bullets, but mostly with V-Max, Varmageddon, Blitz King and Barnes Varmint Grenades. If you want no exits with your .243 Winchester - don't shoot them inside of 100 yards with anything, if you can. I don't keep pelts - but from the many coyotes that I have shot - I'd pick the 62 grain Varmint Grenade. I have never had lone exit when shot past 100 yards, but more importantly for me - I have never had one get away when shot solidly in the body - even if a poorly placed shot. Likewise, in my .223, I use the 50- VG. The LEAD FREE V-Max are also good, though. Because both of these bullets use sintered bullet core, they disintegrate much better than solid lead-core bullets. While these bullets don't carry as far as heavier, leaded core bullets - they open much better at distance - which for your purpose - is another plus. The 62 Barnes with 47.6 grns. Reloader 19 works best in my factory rifle. Reloader 15 seems to be superior in mine when using a leaded 58 V-Max. I'd skip the FMJ bullets. They can provide small holes and acceptable exit wounds when not shot up close - but they are very poor killers. Good luck.

Had good luck with 80 gr Speer hot cors and 75 grain hornady hp.

As was said earlier, fur prices are nothing right now unless selling to the tourist market. I use now use 105's, 108s, 115s in a 243AI. Some are clean, some look like the results of the 39 blitzking above.

I have an AR-10T in .243. Wearing the oem Mike Rock 26” bbl. It weighs a ton, if I’m going to save fur I load it with .17 Remington fodder in my AI Sako, and slide the bolt gun next to the Armalite in my midway Tactical drag bag. I have not found a fur friendly 6mm. My Sako vixen 6 PPC is even a bit rough.

I've been using a 243 this season. 69 bergers have been pretty fur friendly but my guess is the load isn't hauling the mail either, small exits to none unless you gut punch'em. Bullet is discontinued though will be going to 55 BT. I have a friend using the 75 speer HP and that has been fur friendly. I think 55BK will be fur friendly driven hard as my brother uses a 243AI with 55BK going 4200fps and they don't exit and hit like a freight train. Shot placement is key and a bad shot usually means big holes. I still prefer 20cals with 32-40gr HPs for fur.

Hey all, I’ve recently bought a custom DNA firearms AR-10 in .243 and would like some suggestions on some fur friendly rounds. I’ve heard Nosler partition is good, but haven’t seen any results. I’ve heard VMAX and Nosler BT are good as well, but mainly I’m wanting to know what you guys shoot. I’m 100% okay with holes that are 1/4-1 3/4 inch because I can sew those up. Just looking for something pelt friendly, but won’t have a coyote running half way across the state.
My favorite 6mm varmint bullet is the Sierra #1515 80-grain Biltz Varminter.
