Everyone’s favorite fur friendly 223 load

Hey Paul,

thank you. That’s a wealth of test subjects there lol. Have you noticed similar results with the 40gr blitzkings too? Only reason I ask if cause I have them, if not I’ll be starting with the 40gr vmax for sure and appreciate That. Now if I could only find 300 yotes in southern ontsrio that are willling to come to a call lol
Matt,

At the time when I was addicted to hunting coyotes the 40 Blitzking was not available. So no, I never tried them. Based on what I have read, not tested, they are a little more explosive in expansion. Which may or may not be a good thing. One thing I learned the hard way I can share is if you have a coyote quartering towards you, do not shoot behind the shoulder as the bullet will explode on the surface after hitting the ribs. Place the shot between the shoulder and the neck and if done correctly you will never have an exit. A few coyotes gave their lives to prove this theory. Good luck and happy hunting!

I’m definitely interested in the 53gr vmax. I feel like I could get them going pretty quick and holding a decent bc should make those slightly longer pokes easier!
I have been shooting the 53 in 223ai at 3394fps. deadly. I have killed dogs with the 55 soft point standard 223 out to 394 no problem. When calling our shots are usually close like 100 yards. We killed four last hunt and long was 140 yards. We try not to educate them unless we have a for sure long shot otherwise we don't shoot.

Thank you again. I will load up a few 40gr blitzkings as I have them now and have a load I know shoots, and in the mean time I’ll see if I can get my hands on a bunch of 53gr vmax and 40gr vmax to try. I’ll get the factory in the 53gr to see if it’s worth testing further. I noticed the same thing with the 39gr blitzkings as well. Had to be choosy with shot placement. It always killed, but some times took all the fur with it lol. So testing the 35gr bergers as well.

now time to go layout some dogs

The 53 have been pretty fur friendly for you?

Very much so. I am not getting exits with them. I have shot about 20 dogs with that combo in the last year. I only use that rifle over bait. I just picked up another bolt gun and will try the 53's in that. I run the 55sp out of the AR's.

What’s the reason for only running that rifle over bait?

The rifle is a little heavy for calling and I like using an AR for calling for multiple dogs or me missing a shot.. lol. Setting over bait I have good data to 625 yards so I have a very wide area to shoot, out of a blind on a bench.

My COYOTE fur friendly loads that I shot out of Rem 700's and Rem 788's:
55g Winchester soft point
26.5g of Win 748
seat the bullet .010 off the lands
3050 fps
rarely ever shot a hole through one
Large THUMP sound when you connected on one-thin jacket, large lead tip.

If there are lions in the area, you will appreciate the bullet weight as it will penetrate hips, shoulders, and heavy ribs, and works well on quartering shots. I have shot does with this load.

200 yard shots- 275 yard shots, Issue on 40g bullets is
when you hit them behind the diaphram, they flip and flop, then they are GONE!

For bobcats and fox, seems like just about everything 22 just shreds them. I found a load with 40g Sierra HP at 3000 fps with 12g of Blue dot that worked very well.

For those that like a non fur friendly load, I will throw this one in:

Rem 700 bolt gun
Hot load of Benchmark, CCI 450
55g Sierra lead tip blitz
.005 off the lands
My accuracy load is at 3450, 24" bbl

Just about shoots a large coyote in half, you get to sew the two halves back together.

with a 55g Speer gold dot, you are good to go on deer and hogs with this load, Very accurate, and the 55g Hornady sp will please also.

We use 55grn sierra super roos with 26.2 of 2208/varget behind them have no issues dropping roos with them. Pigs and fixes dnt mind them but you can turn a rabbit into paddock pizza pretty quick with them . Have used thousands of them down under never had an issue .
