Is the Auto-Throw Worth It?

I have the fx120i with the auto-trickler and updated v3 software. Debating whether to order the auto-throw. Right now I throw with a Harrell’s and trickle up. I have a Pact scale and trickler that I cools also use bit see no need to at present.

I thought about constructing a stand that would place the Harrell’s directly over the scale. Not nearly as cool looking as the auto-throw.

So, is it worth it to upgrade to the auto-throw?

I was a very late adopter as I could not see the point if I was throwing close charges in the Harrel's into my pan then placing on the scale to trickle up to weight. My brother...I am here to testify that I have seen the light! :) The Harrel's now collects dust and is in reserve in case of an autotrickler meltdown before a match. Be glad you have waited as the new trickler with Bluetooth is really impressive. I would pull the trigger...you will not be disappointed.

edit- per Pat's comment, the original trickler was noisy but the current Bluetooth unit is MUCH quieter (and easy to dial in a weight and let it eat).

I think that its a good idea to be able to use a standard powder drop with the auto-trickler.

I spoke with area419 about creating an adapter that would allow a standard powder drop to mounted to the area 419 lid and straw for the A&D FXi scale. They seems to like the idea and said that they would put it on the list to create once the lathe wasn't so busy. This was last December - never heard back from them again.

Thanks

I use a Lee to throw into a pan and the trickler to do its thing. Its economical. $25 for a throw. I throw two different to three different powders. I really don't like dumping powder out of the trickler and I'd hate it even more if I had to dump the throw.

That's the main reason why I didn't want the auto throw setup.

Here is my story on the throw. I was using a Harrell's + Autotrickler on a 120i and happy. Throw, trickle, worked great, I couldn't see any reason to change. It was way better than my Chargemaster. I told Adam one night at Connaught that I saw no need to change the way I did it....

Then a couple of months later I was up in Canada shooting at Gagetown and Adam kinda forced a throw on me (ok, he gave it to me). OMG, it was like when I finally decided to use GPS instead of maps. Why was I hard headed about this. Loading just got a lot easier.

It's not really faster, it's just easier, and psychologically you don't have to try to keep up to keep the machine running when you load. You just charge cases, it keeps up with itself. All you have to do is keep the hopper full and put the powder in the cases.

I'm about to sit down to load, and by the middle of next week I will have loaded 250+ cases for the Atlantics and Mini-palma in Canada, and another 500+ to ship to Raton for the FCNC. I can't imagine doing that the way I used to do it.

The Full Blown V3 is awesome! I have several back to back matches this month. Without it I don’t know if I could do it. It cut my powder measuring time at least in half if not down to a 1/3!

I’ve got the AutoTrickler and a Harrell’s powder throw. There is no comparison! It’s just that much better!

I was slow to purchase! I thought how much better can it be? Well it’s WAY Way WAY better!!!

I have the FX w/ AutoThrow & Trickler. I have a question for the LT-32, N-133 users. Have you had a hard time adjusting the A.Throw to throw these very fine granules without leaking out? I DO adjust the single screw on the thrower and it works great for the stick powder I use. It seems when I get it adjusted for the finer powder it is to tight to function properly............Am I just " Ham Fisted " and have to play with it a whole lot more or is there an upgrade from the Lee thrower available.............Thanks

Regards

You'll never get that Lee thrower to work very well with fine powders; it's always going to leak on you. In order to use ball powders or the like, you'd need to upgrade to the V3 based thrower; it's a whole new system that isn't based off Lee, and won't leak/bind etc.

Thanks for the response.....For the $220.+ shipping upgrade for the thrower piece I think I will continue to use my Harrells to get it close and let the trickler do it's thing. I am a low volume operation that does a match every now & then. If I was really having to roll a lot of them up I would up-grade for sure.

Robin, I’ve been back and forth in my mind on this but keep sticking with not needing an auto thrower. If I was running a single stage press I’d probably have the auto thrower but since I’m running a 650 it hasn’t made sense.

Since the 650’s primer and powder thrower are in the same station I’m priming and short-throwing a charge in one step, then transferring that to the pan and auto trickling up to the final charge. While it’s doing that I’m priming and short-throwing another case.
Then I seat a bullet in the first case and done.

In other words, I’ve got a singe piece flow instead of batch processing. I think this only makes sense if you have a progressive press.
