You can't have too many guns. Never let "need" get in the way of "want". Now memorize that rule:) Can't tell you how many times people have asked me if I really needed another rifle. If they ask, they just don't get it.

Killed my first mule deer with my fathers Savage 99E in 243. I would not even attempt to guess the number of animals my father killed with that rifle but that and old 30/30 Winchesters was all he ever liked to carry.

My first rifle was a Remington 600 in 243 which was present from my father and brother on my 12th birthday. The Rem 600 was first gun I ever shot with a scope on it. Killed a deer almost every year with it and a couple elk until my senior year in high school when I traded it and several hundred more dollars for a custom 7mm mag because I believed in the myth of more is better.

I have come full circle and have found that for the most part all big guns do is cause big flinches. I like that when I pull the trigger on my 243 I can follow my shot. Really tough to do that with the big magnums or even the heavier non magnums rounds.Never had many animals need more than an extra follow up shot but keeping the animal in the scope helps if you do. I do not feel under gunned and I plan on carrying my 243, ok its really a 6mm SLR but close enough, on a brown bear hunt and caribou hunt this year in Alaska if my plans and my current employers can sync up.

I am 46 years old and have been around this world a couple times on Uncle Sugars dime. My time in the military taught me several things one of which is "It don't matter what you shoot them with, Its where you hit them".

I have twin 5 year old sons and both of them will have a .22 LR and a 243 when they are old enough so in my opinion yes everyone should have 243.
