Is haveing a 243 really necessary?

No need to build another for larger game, as the 6mm will do everything the .243 will. if you just wasnt another rifle, I'd go bigger to cover the bigger critters. For small varmints and light bullets - a 1-10" tw .243 will prevail.

I have a 6 ackley with a 1 in 8 twist (Bartlien) also.Spins the jackets off the 75 grain Sierra bullets. I couldn't hit the target at 100 yards. Kind of poor accuracy for a Bat rifle I thought..At 50 yards I had 3-5 jagged holes in the target for every bullet I shot at it. I changed to Sierra 70 gr match bullet at 3900 fps and problem solved.I usually order 12 or 14 twist barrels for my 6mm varmint guns since I always shoot the light bullets for prairie dogs.

The advantage of a 243 is the selection of ammo available. That being said if you reload, your 6mmAI is every bit as adoptive in terms of available bullets and, the 6mmAI wins hands down in terms of velocity. The way I view it is a 6mm is simply an advanced and improved 243, especially the Ackley.

I am rather fond of my 243 win. Really the 6mm caliber in general, so a 6mm AI would do. But I think a 243 win will stay in my safe for my lifetime.

Woundmaster... Ha! I would like to see if those folks would like to stand out there for me to take a polk at and see if they still say that? Ha!

Knowing what your limits are and making good shots are the name of the game, unless you only Elmer Fudd it once a year. Most on this forum are well beyond that however and much more " edgumacated" to even say stuff like that.

Good stuff.

I agree with you a 100% and the right bullet choice make a big difference as well.

In my area (and others) some cartridges get the reputation as poor killers of game, mostly deer. I don't know how many times I've heard a 243 Win, and the 308 Win can't kill anything. As we (at least most of us) know that's not true. Or the common line, why would you buy a 308 when you can get a 30-06. Velocity is what it is, but bullets make a difference. Lots of guys can't seem to get that part of the equation. JMO Barlow
