Is haveing a 243 really necessary?

It's a off questions but I have had a few 243 ' s and have sold them and now I questioning building one but I already have a 22-250 Ackley and a 6mm Ackley, so do I need one? The 250 has a 1-12 twist and the 6 has a 1-8 twist. Now my dad swears by them !! And I have been trying to take that into consideration being since he has had them his whole life ( ultra medalists, vixion, 40X ) just seeing what you all think. Thank Caleb.

I say you already have it covered by the two guns already. I'd say move up or down and cover a different cal. Maybe a 7 or 300 or 338 etc.

What didn't you like about the previous 243's that you've had?

Hey,the .243 is a great cartridge and I wont be without one. On the other hand you have a couple of 6mm cartridges that will do the job. Justify it for fun,you can never have enough guns anyway. It(.243) is an accurate round just as it is and with lapua brass necks don't split as much. I love the round and like it for hunting and varminting.

I can't really answer why I didn't like them ..I guess I can't really say that I didn't like them ..I have a TON have components for it and I already have the 7mm and 300 range covered. .but if I was to build another keeping the other two Ackley's in mind how would I build it? ( contour , twist, and barrle length? ) ..

well are you thinking, hunting/paper punching/steel? what's the main purpose of the weapon?

Range and weight?

What about a 6.5? it's in between the 6 and 7.

Hunting, PD, steel and paper is what I mostly do ....and the 6.5 does catch my eye!..but I don't have anything to reload the 6.5. I guess I could just use this action to build something eles and keep all the 243 stuff being since I have two girls and a boy that like to hunt but are too young for a centerfire. .I could build a sweet little 243 youth down the road..

depends on what you want to shoot through it? i've had 10 twist that shot 85 and 90's great. light barrel for hunting. But then i've got a 6SLR which is basically a modified 243 that has an 8 twist that shoots 105 like a house of fire.

Most factory twists are in that 10 range.

if you're thinking 6.5mm take a hard look at the 6.5mm Rem Short action ultra mag. (6.5 SAUM, S4). I'd really thought about it for a long time, but figured i'd already had it covered.

6lsr? What is it? And as far as the 6.5 goes, my cousins are shooting 6.5 Ackley's and love them!!..but if I was to build a 243 would the 10 twist take care of the 70 to 87 gr. Range?

The 10 twist in 243 would take care of that 70-90grn bullet very well.

The 6.5SAUM is pretty impressive. I guess they're getting 3100fps with 140grn bullets and getting 3500 rounds down a barrel. I don't know how they're doing it, but it's impressive. Way better then a 6.5x284 at 1K rounds.

The 6mm SLR is also called the 6mm Super Long Range. It is a 243 case that is ran through a die to bump the shoulder from 20 to 30 degrees which elongates the neck of the case. I can run a 105grn bullet up to 3200fps if i want. There is lots of info on this site about it or go to 6mmAR.com and you'll find more.

Hey thanks I am going to check that out!

Caleb..... Of course having a .243 is completely necessary haha. I, like you have a 6mm ackley and I also have a .220 swift and a golf bag full of .22-250s.... My 6mm shoots an 80gr Berger lights out over 50.0 grains of imr 4350. It's got a 28 inch barrel and they leave it running 3,700 fps. It is bad bad medicine for a coyote. And that is performance that I cannot touch with a 243 however a good ole 243 is still tough to beat. They like all the same bullets and powders as my 6mm and if I feel like having a little fun I don't have to roast the barrel on my built guns. And if you're ever in a bind for a few rounds I'm pretty sure you can buy loaded ammo for a 243 at JC Penny's.... They're just tough to beat. But hell you know I like em.... That's why I bought yours haha.

Ha! It seems we are exactly in the opposite corner on this one. I feel the same way about the 270, 25 caliber anything and the 22-250 as I have those bases covered by other cartridges like the 223, 22BR, 243AI, 6mmSLR, 6X47, 6BR, 6.5X284, 280AI, 7mmRem Mag, and of course a truck load of 308's. I think why in the world would I need a 22-250 or a 25 cal rifle? Pretty much have it all covered weather its hunting game or shooting paper or banging steel.
I understand what your thoughts are. If you have that base covered just as I do and it seems you dont REALLY need it. But this is MERICA brother and its your choice ( for now).
Lots of neat stuff out there. Almost too much.... Well nix that part.

What ever you decide im sure you will do fine with your choices.
Best of luck, be safe and shoot straight.

Where the 243 shines in my opinion is for the "one gun" hunter who want to hunt both deer size game and varmints and predators. I realize that in today's affluent society the "one gun" hunter probably doesn't exits anymore but it did in my youth.

I was raised in a lower middle class family where money was tight. The 243 was my first rifle, Winchester Model 70, and it served me quite well for many years and was my only rifle until I graduated from college and got my first professional job. I took several white tails with it plus well over hundred groundhogs and several foxes. I never lost a deer that I shot with the 243. Hunting with one rifle enabled me to develop a lot of confidence and familiarity with the rifle which made me a better field shot.

For sure there are better deer and varmint cartridges so you don't NEED a 243 but it is sure nice to have one. :) I have four and totally enjoy shooting them.

I'd say the 6MM has it covered but not sure if you can shoot 60-70 grain varmint bullets in a 1/8 twist. The 60 grain sierra HP is simply amazing for squirrels.

My 6mm ackley has an 8 twist. At around 3750fps the 60/70 gr sierras and the 75 gr vmax's come apart about 50 yards from my crown. Which is a shame because I was creeping up on a good load with the 75 vmax. I switched to an 80 Berger and it runs right at 3,700 and stays together. Which makes the gun very versatile. Shoots the 80 grains half moa, and also shoots a 107 match king about a quarter moa
