Imperial Lube for sizing or car wax/juice?

It seems I read on here that someone mentioned a substitute for the Imperial and also stated in same post how much better it smelled.

It has been at least 3 weeks since I read that. Can anyone refresh my memory on the substitute used (that gave same results)?

As far as I am aware, Imperial has no smell issues at all. Are you sure that you are not thinking of Ballistol? To me its liquid version has a repulsive smell, and some have use it to lube cases for sizing. I am told that the spray version does not smell as bad. I got some of the liquid, and promptly gave it away, to someone whose nose evidently does not work as well.

Erik,
Perhaps you should run an ad and offer it to reloaders who have impaired senses of smell, or who did not inherit the Ballistol smells awful gene. ;D

No smell issues? Interesting. I opened my tin after I'd read about the alternative and it did have a somewhat posi fluid/rotted earth smell. Therefore my post.

Ballistol contains Anise Oil, my Wife calls it Anus Oil! I use it on the exterior of my firearms and can clear out the Camp after the hunt! ;D

I said I am not aware of any issues. Evidently I can add this to the long list of things that I am not aware of, but perhaps should be. In any case, more to the original question, and toward being more helpful, Todd Kindler who runs The Woodchuck Den, sells a wax based case lube that my nose does not notice a smell coming from, but given my lack of awareness of an odor problem with Imperial, perhaps you should ask Todd. In any case it is a wax emulsion that will dry, but retain its lube properties, which makes it handy for expanding necks. You put some in with a Q tip and if you give it time to dry, you can load without having to remove it. Powder will not stick to it when it is dry. Of course you will have less bullet pull.

Imperial wax is my go to unless I am in a hurry reloading trying to tune in a rifle.

I carry and use the Hornaday spray lube. Works good when your in a hurry. Doesn't hurt your powder if you spray a little inside the necks.

Car wax might kill your powder around the inside neck area.

I use Imperial and have never had a problem. But one day just for s&g I grabbed a can of Sno-Seal sitting under my bench and sized a couple of cases with it, it worked fine. Barlow

way back in the last century I had a lot of GI 06 brass fired in m1,
later built a 6.5-06 and also a 30-06 infield sporterized. the result was that I did not have funds for new brass so I checked the GI I had collected while shooting in matches in army.

it was all over sized for the infield and needed sizing down for the 6.5,

result is found a 1 lb jar of pure lanolin at a drug store, it was really thick and sticky, so I cut a portion with mineral spirits, and the result was a lub the allowed full length sizing w/o a problem and the necking down for the 6.5 was a breeze. rubbed it on let cases sit for a while the ran them through the dies. great stuff.

still have some left.

Royal Case and Die Lube. Smooth as butter, sweet as honey. That's what it says on the container. I think it smells good. A bit like honey and it makes my finger tips smooth as a baby's behind.

RCBS Lube 2 - No smell and works betters than Imperial sizing wax, especially when using a Small Base die. Sometimes when you have a pesky resizing issue or base sizing (casings fired in another weapon and too big to fit into the chamber) you have to be use a liberal amount (not dripping), but just wipe off the excess. I still use Imperial sizing wax, but only when resizing brass for .001 - .004 bump. Has worked for me for years. The Anhydrus lanoline mix is the other possibility.

As the previous poster mentioned, this is the stuff. Works just as good as Imperial, maybe even better. A dab behind each ear and the ladies will be swarming. Stuff smells so good I tried the taste test. Not so good in that department.

Went to the loading bench a week ago on a Saturday night to load ammo for a mid-range match the next morning... since it was 9:00pm I was S.O.L. when the can of case lube spray was empty. Looked around and decided to grab the Mothers Carnuba paste wax and give it a try. They sized OK, all of them went bang and shot well enough (196-8x on my first string prone w\sling). I was\am worried about it corrupting the powder so the leftovers will probably shot as sighters or just practice ammo.

Everybody has a qt of engine oil laying around, works just fine in a pinch when you run out of your favorite. Use same technique as wax- soak a paper towel square, get your fingers damp, use sparingly.

For FL or heavy resizing/forming works better than Imperial if you ask me.

Personal favorite is Joe Gibbs BR 20w-50 ;)
