I'm getting my first AR

yes, I use to play religiously. Quite literally every weekend in high school. I grew out of it when I joined the army. Plus it’s as expensive as shooting.

We're you good at It?

Are you still in the military? That training should help out during a shtf situation. You just won't be able to call in an air strike or artillery.

yes, very. It directly correlated to my current self defensive tactics. As far as my military training, I have a drone that sprays napalm so my air strike is covered for those young whipper snappers trying to steal my TV.

JMayo, You might check out CDNN Sports. They seem to be constantly running a sale on all kinds of AR parts and complete rifles in every price range. They sell DPMS parts and rifles and this would probably be my choice for a decent entry level AR.

Not sure if you have considered them but for close quarters inside the home scenarios the bullpup configuration like the Tavor X95 may be an option.

@JMayo sorry for the derail. Here are some great AR platforms.

LWRC
Daniel Defense
Alexander Arms
Colt
Larue
Noveske
Yankee Hill
BCM
Barrett
Rock River Arms
FN

To name a few....

I have used a mega sidecharger on the last 2 I have assembled. Much easier to operate on a rifle with a large scope.

My 6mm ar turbo 40 improved has one and I really like it. That was a dpms lowpro which is a other heavy walled upper good for heavy barrels. Robert Whitley upper.

The OP- JMAYO left us at post#15 first page. So all was for naught or maybe fun, who knows?
I've read everyone ! Taking notes !
If I thought I could get all the parts I might would build. But backorder seems to be the only way to order.

I wait patiently for months for parts. But then i have plenty of other guns to play with. Mostly my benchrest bolt guns. AR's are a poor substitute but they are fun to play with. I only own 1 chambered in 5.56. The first one I bought years ago. A stock PSA. Put an protect on it. It is my truck gun. Rides under the back seat in a rack.

All since then have been other chamberings. Lots better cartridges out there than the .223/5,56. I like the grendel and all it's wildcat cousins.

For a first gun i recommend that stock PSA. It has been flawless. Reasonably priced too! Careful though. I got mine out of curiosity. What is the big deal. Well I was like a kid with a new .22. Really that is what it is a souped up .22 they are addictive especially if you start assembling them from parts.

I just got a e-mail from Brownells and they have a bunch of Colt AR Uppers for sale. They have been a good source for AR parts but you got to move fast

. You just won't be able to call in an air strike or artillery.

Hell, when I played back in HS I made a "cannon" out of 1-1/2" rolled water pipe. I had a shaft welded into one end that had a 1/2" chamber bored into it. We'd stuff a couple dozen paintballs down it with a shop rag as a wad. Propelled by 90 grains of pyrodex, I'd be scared to shoot that thing nowadays :).

ARs are pretty customizable so you can tailor them to your particular use case. I’m not a huge AR fan but if you get a WOA upper (relatively inexpensive with wilson ss match barrels) or a Dtech upper (somewhat expensive with shilen select match barrels) you can get turn key 10-shot sub-moa results. When I was a kid AR accuracy sucked so I never wanted one. But technology marches on so I’ve since become a moderate convert. YMMV.

Next thread is PCC just to twist your mind a little. Throw in SBR and you may never know what you want. There is a lot to chose from in the AR platform.

Laying all jokes aside, if I didn't want to spend a lot of money and wanted a decent and reliable AR. The Delton M4 light profile would be my choice. I use a lot of parts from diff companys and the Delton LPK, barrels and such don't seem to be junk from china.
