A Remington 700 or Winchester Model 70, .30-06, not too heavy. I built one just like that and it shoots great at 1000. With the addition of a scope, it would be a good, if slightly heavy, hunting rifle. Not "ideal" for anything, but suitable for just about anything.
Rifle design is always a matter of compromising one function to optimize another (weight, length, recoil, power, etc.). The compromises in this rifle lean toward range use but don't entirely preclude other uses.
