There "IS" a way to get the best of both worlds my friend.
You find a load that uses blistering speed on a heavy bullet for hunting
Then find a load using a lighter bullet at slower speed with great accuracy for target shooting
Or maybe get lucky and find a load using the same powder at different charges with the same bullet
All you gotta do to increase barrel life is lower the pressures and slow the bullets down.
A large capacity cartridge can shoot every bit as SLOW as a small capacity cartridge, BUT a small capacity cartridge can NEVER shoot as FAST as a large capacity cartridge.
Think of a 'hot rod muscle car' (large cartridge). You can give the hot rod to your wife to take the kids to soccer practice and it will do that task just fine. Just might look odd

Then you can take your hot rod to the drag strip and blow the doors off when you get the need for speed and it will do that fine as well. A 'Toyota Prius' (medium cartridge) can only complete one of those tasks

Understand?
BTW calib. We haven't shot the 6.5 WSM enough to determine barrel life and it is a seasonal big game hunting rifle so it may be many years before the 140gr Berger gets sent down the barrel at 3180 fps enough times to start considerably wearing on the throat
