If you were building one rifle as a "do-it-all" rifle...

i am not sure i could include the functions you include in one rifle, The versions of AR come closest however, caliber becomes a problem when you say huntind (for what) pd, deer.elk- distance what distance?

Defense limits you to some form of Auto, short bbl, mobility, etc and that limits you for distance and hunting beyond shorter distances and for larger animals.

not a good combo, maybe some one has more thoughts than i but this is MHO

AR 15 with four seperate uppers for each of your requirments.

One rifle? Why? Its America, its my duty to buy as many as I can. Amen.

I enjoy shooting and enjoy shooting diffrent caliber's. Not sure I would have just one for the wide spectrum you listed. Maybe a paper puncher and hunting rifle could combine for a single rifle weather your talking Big game or smallgame predator rifle, or a 22lr for gopher's ( hunting is a big spectrum) or a RockChuck rifle or Whitetail or Moose.
Distance is what? Given that Most hunters shoot no farther than 100 to 200yds what is distance? 300, 400, 500, 600 or 1000 yards? I define Long range along the lines of NRA highpower, anything over 600 yards. But thats me.
Defense Rifle? Get a shotgun, or Hand gun, Pepperspray, Tazzer. I have never had to use one in a defense situation, Well in this Country anyways. A MK19 works great in the open area of Afghanistan.
Maybe someone here has had actual experience defending themselves with a rifle on there personal property but I have been very fortunate not to have had that happen.

As you can see your question is rather open ended. Maybe you could narrow it down a little?

Happy Holidays to you

There really isn't a do all in anything that works good, and rifles are no different, I could waste bandwidth and give my rendition but I believe Bob and Russ pretty well nailed it all. I am not a black gun fan but I guess I would pick a AR in .243 Winchester, 1:8 twist, full auto/ Semi auto functions with a 203 grenade Launcher attached :P :o ::)
Wayne.

One rifle would be a 6.5 something, too many good choices on the specific caliber. The only thing that wouldn't make me warm & fuzzy would be home defense. Nothing trumps a shotgun.

Bob and Russ, I appreciate your comments. I have an AR or two, and really enjoy them. Certain for home the 12 is the best medicine. I am thinking of the saying"Beware the man with one rifle...".

So let me narrow down my question a bit. If you are building a bolt action, one that would go with you to the range, have capability at 1000 yards (not suggesting that you'd use it for FTR or anything) what would you build and why. What caliber, stock, trigger group barrel/contour, etc?

Thanks for the Link Roy. That is the kind of thing that I am looking for. Love the 257 Improved/35 Whelen switch barrel idea.

Anyone know what a Rem 700 Ti receiver would cost?

I wonder if I could mount Wayne's M203.....

Crazy idea here. How about a good old fashioned lever action? Caliber well hell I don't know. A 30-30 would do anything you want if you learn how to get close and pick your shots.

Everybody needs
9mm Pistol
12 Gauge Shotgun
AR15 5.56
308 bolt gun

This ammo can be found or taken away from somebody if the SHTF almost everywhere in the country.

Cimmaron,

US Rifle M14.

Or if you want to step into the 21st century, an M110 (AR-10), same caliber but in a much more modern platform.

Have to agree with the comments of others here, though. Why limit yourself to one, when you can have a variety? After all, aren't we supposed to be "celebrating diversity" these days? Gimme one of each!

For self-defense ... .40-cal. semi-auto pistol.

For everything else ... 6x47 or 6.5x47 with a medium-weight barrel.

Merry Christmas

I lurve the 260 and am thinking of using a Savage 110 long action I have in the safe to build the following as a multi-purpose rifle:

Criterion 22" 260 Remington prefit barrel, light varmint contour, threaded
Manners T3 stock, molded in Desert Sage or GAP camo
CDI DBM for 308 magazines
EGW 20MOA base, Burris XTR rings
Bushnell Elite 4200 3-12x44 FFP

Should be light, handy, and push 130s around 2900fps.

IMHO, ain't no such animal! I'll take one of each thank you! Merry Christmas all!

BoilerUp,

I like your style. I am thinking along similar lines, but maybe 7mm WSM
