I want speed...

I'm curious about what bullet you will use and what twist for this rifle. I expect this is for distant rockchucks, probably. Back when I was in line for barrel work by Greg Tannel I used one of my 1-8 30" 1.350" Lilja barrels for a heavy 6-284. So far I have used my heavy 6.5-300WSM for long shots but the time is coming for me to try out the 6-284, just need to scope the rifle. Sometimes I think that barrel would have been better used on a heavy competition IBS rifle(6Dasher).My thought on this is that the 1-8 twist is really more than needed for the bigger 6-284 case, a 1-12 with the 87 vmax would probably been what I should have done. I will make the best of what I have and use some of my 105 Amax bullets for varmints.Just curious on your thoughts about using lighter than 105 class bullets for the use on varmints, do you think the 1-8 twist will spin the 87s too fast? Been thinking about trying the new ELD-VT 6mm 80 grain , but Ive heard some people are disappointed with them. I will try some for myself but I definitely appreciate your input.

Speed Kills! I lean towards max velocity with good (1/4moa) accuracy. That is why I am giving serious thought to another 6-284.
Go big or go home! :)

There are two schools of thought here; and ne'er the twain shall meet and agree.
I am in the speed camp, especially since the economy crash in 2008. I live in SW Idaho, and I have had probably three hundred trips out Rockchuck shoooting in the sixteen seasons since. That's a 250 mile or more round trip.
I may get 20-25 shots on live varmints, if you count a couple winter trips hunting coyotes. These days, that is a Benjamin for fuel; and $20 for my foot-long Jersey Mikes and a six pack of Coke Zero times 15-20 trips.

That takes barrel erosion and the cost of ammunition into the petty cash bin. Six hundred dollars for new barrel fit to one of my Varmint rifles, and (say) a hundred and fifty dollars for powder, primers, and bullets that will get me thru two seasons.

I take a 223 along for shots under 350 yards, a 6mm like this one for intermediate 350-600 yards; and my 257 Banshee or a 6.5-284 for shots past 600 yards. My Savage 223 will probably last 3500 rounds. The 6.5-284 is a factory Savage SS. 2000 rounds. The two big guns each 1500 rounds of useful life is perhaps four years on a barrel.

A good year, I fire 250 rounds of 223, the others about equal number combined. Holy Guacamole!! Maybe three seasons...

Barrel erosion and replacement is down to Number Three on the cost list.

take care, and Go Big!!

The fuel and food numbers = or surpass the firearms and ammunition cost.

PS: RE building a new 60284. I was able to purchase 200 new 6.5-284 cases here last week. If I get eight reloads on them, that's 1600 rounds of ammunition I will shoot. I'll try to buy 1000 of the 95gr Hybrid bullets. 600 yard rifle.

YMMV,

Good plan. You may get 525 rounds through it.

Mind, a local restauranteur kept his clients happy for years with a 22/284. Reckoned it was the best deer cartridge he ever owned.

Speed sells and I'm buying!
I'm not loading varmint bullets in my 240 wby right now but I'm shooting the Barnes 80 gr TTSX @ 3725 fps
Bang flop!
The 70 - 75 gr loads pushed faster make stuff explode...
Krieger makes new barrels every day :)

6-284 H 1000 85- 88gr bullets 12 twist 29-30 barrel . You can get 3800 fps . Lapua brass lasts 5-6 firings.
sounds like a fun recipe!
you could zero that at 300y and hardly ever have to dial the scope. it'd be a fun coyote round!

so when is Hornady going to release the 6PRC?
im guessing they'll give the 22creed time to fizzle out. ha

I use a 243 Ackley and 80 gr. custom bullets. At altitude, 8000'+, I never felt under gunned out to 800+ yds.
Dave, my 243AI was a killer long range range rig. With 70 gr. Nosler BTips @ 3,850, it was death on 'dogs waaaaay out there. The Nosler 55 BTips @ 4, 300 was like cheatin' and my favorite 'dog combo. The 243AI is a great case that peaks accuracy and velocity at the same time....head and shoulders above either the 6 Rem AI or the 6-284.

Good shootin' :) -Al

I had a 6mm-06 built this last summer. With a 95 grain Berger I am just a hair over 3600 fps. I have couple boxes of 70 grain Sierras I want to play with this spring and some reloader 22.
My 20 br sends a 39 BK at 4200 fps. Solid hits on Praire dogs are impressive!!!!
