Hydroform die without press

Does anyone use a whidden or Hornady hydraulic form die without a press to mount it in? I'm thinking of something like boring a hole into a block of wood to slip the bottom of the shell holder down into, keeping the upper portion above it above the block. Then hold the die in place with the left hand and give it a couple whacks with the right.

And do people prefer Hornady or whidden? Hornady seems like it'd be preferable to not have to lube the orings

Thoughts?

Save your self a lot of pain, send them to DJ. Just my two cents. Tommy Mc

He likely wouldn't be able to do my brass and I'd rather pay for a tool to do it myself than increase my brass cost long term.

I've done a search and didn't find anything other than Wheeler saying you didn't have to use a press. But there weren't any alternative methods stated anywhere.

I see no reason my planned method wouldn't work

It won't make consistent length cases even it does start to blow them out. Don't you realize the amount of pressure it takes to blow out the shoulder on a brass case? The die is going to move up instead of the case blowing out using your method. If you were to design your own die system that threaded the shell holder to the die to hold everything in place then your idea might be viable, otherwise you are pissing in the wind.

That's a very good point and the kind of feedback I was looking for.

I'll just go the route of loading bullets to fireform and then get a hydro die and a press for it at a later time.

Thanks!
