How you make gun buying decisions

I have 2 categories.
Need.
Want.

If it in 25 caliber, 7mm, 45ACP and the price is reasonable for me, then I need it.

If it's in anything else, it's a want and has to be a really good price.

Lately I don’t buy much unless it’s a really good deal on something that will upgrade a similar item I already have.
The Florida Guns Waypoint deal and the Minox zp5 at eurooptic this year for example.

With nobody to support other than my self I buy what I want but can usually be reasonable with the amount I'm willing to part with. I've recently bought a couple of fairly rare rifles in .308 which is my favorite centerfire rifle caliber. One was way underpriced and the other was a little on the high side so it all worked out. On the other hand, I might have gone a little overboard when I bought 7 Remington 541 22LR variants in just over a year. I had always wanted one...........:)

I just saw a custom nNghthawk 1911.That was beautiful and a good price. But was just more than i'm willing to spend. To get a nighthawk right now would be a steal of a purchase.

For other guns , I'll spend whatever I need to get what I want. Like my Vudoo competition 22 rimfire. Same amount as that Nighthawk.

Performance definitely drives my purchases, but sometimes the best performance is just more than that.I'm willing to pay.

I think that mostly applies to handguns. I guess, I have a price max .I'm just not willing to go beyond. I got my Sig P211 GTO, but I think that's just the max I'll pay for a handgun.

But for rifles, PCC /SBR, and even full auto (back in the day) I'll pay more. Even then, that Vudoo was the max Iwas willing to pay.

So I guess my question is, am I weird or do other people make buying decisionsThe same way ?

i show a picture of the rifle to my wife. if she says the stock is pretty, i buy it.

How? Do I like it? Do I need/want it? Do I have enough $$ in the gun fund?

That big dead oak tree next to the house needs removed 1st though. Tree guys sure got expensive since I helped Pappy take a few down. Priorities & trying to be responsible are surely overrated... dammit.

Thinking I'm about done buying new guns anyway unless something really outstanding pops up. There a few redundant, used up pieces with good actions sitting around. With the new/same old hoplophobes in charge of VA again, new barrels on old actions sounds like a plan. Jumping thru hoops for a new gun buyers permission card every 5 years my ass. Maybe I'll buy an AR soon just because they dont want me to have it.

I talk myself into stuff I dont need all the time. I always think I'm older and smarter but it always ends the same even when I talk myself out of something. Biggest problem I have is I dont buy cheap anything so its always a reasonably large expenditure. I apparently like to live with some kind of regret at all times to make sure im not overly happy.

As long as I designate money for needs, I don’t tend to pull out of it for wants. Firearms are more in the wants category any more.

That said, a friend of mine let me take his Kimber HS in .22 home a couple months ago. I scoped it, shot it with different ammo, kept the targets, un scoped it. He would never put a price on it, I would never offer one up. I’m almost certain the barrel has been shortened based on crown and muzzle.

I finally offered to trade him a scope he has his eye on. Nope, but at least I’ve got an idea of what money he wants out of it now. More than I want to spend…

It is however, still in my spare room… not sure what to think of that.

If I were honest, I would say my purchasing is done "poorly". Either I am poor, will be poor, or make poor decisions, (poor me.) And the second generalization is that I buy high, sell low.

My Dad’s buying philosophy: “If you see something you want, and you got the money to pay for it, it’s not too expensive “. He didn’t like borrowing money!

First thought…. “I need another gun like I need another hole in my head.” Then low and behold someone comes out with something I can’t live without so I chew on it a bit and then research it and if I still want it , I buy it. I have a wife that’s very supportive of my gun sickness. She makes it too easy. I’ve pretty much given up on gun shows as far as getting a good deal. Most of the dealers want more for a used gun than a new one.

I just ask myself, how much will I shoot it? If the answer is, not much, then I don't buy it. If the answer is, every week, then I buy it. If that means a current gun is not used, it gets sold.
