How you make gun buying decisions

I just saw a custom nNghthawk 1911.That was beautiful and a good price. But was just more than i'm willing to spend. To get a nighthawk right now would be a steal of a purchase.

For other guns , I'll spend whatever I need to get what I want. Like my Vudoo competition 22 rimfire. Same amount as that Nighthawk.

Performance definitely drives my purchases, but sometimes the best performance is just more than that.I'm willing to pay.

I think that mostly applies to handguns. I guess, I have a price max .I'm just not willing to go beyond. I got my Sig P211 GTO, but I think that's just the max I'll pay for a handgun.

But for rifles, PCC /SBR, and even full auto (back in the day) I'll pay more. Even then, that Vudoo was the max Iwas willing to pay.

So I guess my question is, am I weird or do other people make buying decisionsThe same way ?

This post makes me smile. This has came up in conversation lately with some of my friends. I'm not a person to haggle on a price. I have a amount I feel like I can afford and I'm pretty disciplined at staying there. I had been thinking about buying a used rifle for UBR for several years. A few weeks ago I felt like I should look at the classified (something I very seldom do) and bought a rifle. After receiving it, its better than I expected. I trust God. Usually there is obvious signs of yes or no for me.

Guns are like cars, they all do the same thing. Some are bigger than others. Do you need to carry an Abrams Tank across the country, or groceries across town?

Trust your judgement/experience/evidence.

Beware the man who owns but one gun, he may just know how to use it.

I look for deals. If I REALLY want it, I’ll buy new from a gun shop I have a special relationship with. I have bought guns I don’t need just because they had a really good price on them.
I would never buy a rimfire gun that cost as much as a good center fire rifle. Maybe just me.

While my firearm's buying days are over, looking back over 50+ years I would say it varied depending on financial ability and intended use for the most part. However, I think it's a rare person who is heavily involved in this sport who doesn't make an irrational impulse purchase. We have an amazing ability to talk ourselves into acquiring firearms that we really don't need but isn't that part of the fun of it?

Although I consider myself a practical person, I've made theses impulse purchases enough times myself once I could afford such behavior especially with revolvers. In my younger days I subscribed to Jeff Copper's philosophy: 3 of each type of firearm you need, 1 in service, 1 backup, 1 in repair. It was a great way to rationalize the irrational purchase of firearms.

These days, having gotten a little wiser (I emphasize little), I've downsized to those firearms that fit my current shooting needs and physical limitations. With that said, I do believe one should purchase the best quality firearm they can afford. That may not necessarily be the most expensive. For example, I found factory Tikka's to meet all my shooting performance needs. While they are not cheap, they are also not the most expensive factory firearm on the market. A little research can sometimes pay dividends in selecting the next firearm to purchase.

The cautionary tale I would share is of course buy the best quality firearm you can afford but I've observed many shooters attempting to "buy" their way into performance rather than putting in the hard work of training and practicing necessary to become an expert marksman.

a gun shop I have a special relationship with
Three gun shops nearby. Two of them I’ll never go back to. Treated like they were doing me a real special favor. Screw them, and I have purchased from them in the past. Additionally their knowledge of firearms is nearly non existent.
# 3 gets my business but there’s not much I’m looking for. Not really into pistols except for self defense. Although if I could ever find someone who stocked Umberti’s well….

I went into a gun shop a few weeks ago. opened the door and saw a rifle I have wanted since being a little kid. In my mind I said I'm buying it and did! No regrets! If you can pay your bills and are financially stable, get it and be happy!

We are all different at how we go about "rationalizing" a purchase.
Can you afford it? If you can't, don't get it
Will you shoot it? No sense having a top end pistol and letting it set.
You already have a P211, nice higher end factory pistol. Will this NH
shoot any better?
What's your reasoning for the purchase?
I spend too much time thinking about if I want it or not and usually
gets sold. So I guess I didn't need it.
(just bought a Springfield Prodigy and going to put more money into it to make it better)

Been looking at buying a 458 win. mag.
Do I need it or going to use it, no, but I'll end up buying one someday just because I want one.

YOUR NOT WEIRD

Me? I usually get a wild hair. Then I think about it for a while, watch review videos, think biggrer and bigger and finally either secure funds or get over it. Like I need more guns.. Hey there's a sale on a 22 go getter next week.. Hmmmm.

If the Gun is Accurate and reasonably, Light weight ( that's Tikka's, for Sure ) the Barrel is, a Fast Twist and uses LESS than, 45 grains of Powder,..
