How much to chamfer?

Question from another post.
After chamfering multiple times don't you wind up with a ''hole punch''
If not what makes the mouth square again? Do you chamfer every reload?
thanks Link

I chamfer every time but I also trim to the shortest length everytime since I F/L size... I always figured especially useing a vld tool the chamfer gets trimmed away.

I will say that the vld trimmer can make a hole punch very fast if not careful...

I chamfer using a Wilson VLD cutter only when the brass is new or when I trim the brass to length. Seems to me that the only reason to trim is to break the case edge in a manner that least damages the brass & minimum trim done so no sharp edges are left is all that is necessary.

I only chamfer initially and then after should I need to trim. No trimming, no chamfering.

I just do a light chamfer each time i reload. All i am doing is smoothing it up and removing burrs. Then i smooth it out with a piece of scotchbrite. Never chamfer enough to create an edge.

OK, am I the only irresponsible and lazy bastard who has encountered one or two measly cases that were barely over length, and simply chamfered them down to acceptable length.?? And yes, they would work fine as a hole punch.;) jd

I sometimes spin a deburr tool against the case mouth with no pressure just to hook any dings or burrs lurking there.
I also used a tapered expander to expand the case mouth just enough that the heel of the bullet gets past the edge of the case mouth. This is such a slight expansion that I sometimes do not remove it. If I feel like messing with it and have a Lee factory crimp die I will use the die to straighten up the expanded case mouth.

After the chamfer is the shape I want (first time), I mostly just clean up the shape 2 or 3 times until it is time to trim to length.

Now if you have a cheap dull chamfer tool that is easy but it also isn't the smoothest. A sharp carbide chamfer tool and a light touch cleans up quickly without taking off much brass.

Chamfering too deep....the tool reaches the outer diameter of the case mouth resulting in a nice sharp edge.
I made a perfect leather hole punch that way, out of a 223 case, and then squeezed the mouth with pliers into an oval shape for adding new holes to belts (I've been losing weight.) I touch up the edge with a fine jeweler's file.
