How long does a 308 barrel last in competition?

A friend who has lots of heavy creds (state championship more than 1X, Wimbleton 1X, and Palma team armorer) did it every 3,000 rounds. I, being real frugal, sought to double this and my 600 yard scores plummeted. Sometimes the barrels got so hot it seems like your fingers would stick to them. When it was new it shot real good like 5 in one hole @ 100. Recycling serious shooting barrels for hunting might be valid but I would not need a .30 caliber barrel for that.

I had a huge score at a Palma match with over 6K rounds through a Krieger .3065 x .2098. The next time I took it out, It/I could shoot worth a #$%&.

I shot this barrel 500 rounds ago.
Put a scope on it and shot it from bags at 200 yards. It hammered a .844" 10 shot group! I figured it would be good for a bit longer. I guess I was mistaken.
I don't own a borescope. Waiting on a less expensive option. The Hawkeye profit margin is about 200% and I refuse to support that.

Barrels are individual. Some just open up gradually. Others go to Hell quick. What caused the sudden and catastrophic accuracy loss is that eroded gouge mid barrel. It happens. I wouldn’t take a barrel to a major match with more than 4 grand on it.
