How many rounds does it take?

Texas Solo

Awhile ba k I posted a ? about a carbon ring starting to form in my 6 Dasher. This is by far the most accurate rifle I've ever owned.

After reading all the replies, I got after it. I soaked a mop in Kroil and let it sit overnight. Next I short stroked the first 8" with JB on a tight patch. I did 30 strokes, re armed and did 30 more. Bore scope scope showed a huge difference. So I was happy with my effort.

Went to range with dismal results.

It took 30+ rounds for it to get back where it was. Honestly, it scared the crap out of me. Makes me hesitant to ever do it again.

How many rounds should it take to get back to the .1 or .2 groups I was shooting?

FWIW, Berger 105H and 31.3 Varget, Alpha brass.

No one can answer that one. Every gun is different. Tommy Mc

any rifle I had capable of shooting .1 or .2 groups would be treated just like a Short Range Benchrest Rifle.
Clean it after every 15 rounds.

You obviously had a tune with a severely fouled barrel. Work up a load with a tune with 2 clearing rounds, then your group.

How many rounds were on the barrel prior to removing the carbon ring?

You shouldn’t have a huge carbon ring problem at this point although I would expect the throat to have advanced a small amount . I would re visit the seating depth along with double checking my powder window.

I have had the same experience after cleaning a stubborn carbon ring from a 6.5 Creedmoor Tikka CTR.
I got it clean with JB and it took about 30 rounds to get back to firing like before, which was very accurate.
Since then I keep after the carbon much better and it's still shooting great.
I have switched to Iosso on a nylon brush which seems easier and I use a bronze brush and Free All as my final step.
I never need more than 2 shots for my accuracy and velocity to return now.

Carbon ring can just be a stain. The idea is for it not to become a bulging ring.
It's not 8" in. Prolly moved the seating depth.

After every shooting trip, try soaking the throat using a patch soaked in C4. If may mitigate the buildup of a ring and reduce the need to use an abrasive in the bore.

Many successful short-range benchrest shooters clean their barrels very often. I cannot argue with successful match results. However I have confirmed with borescope and other testing that aggressive frequent brushing can reduce optimal barrel life. Consider that some 6 PPC shooters are replacing their barrels every 500-700 rounds.

I have 6BR and 6BRDX barrels that require very, very limited brushing and have shown superb accuracy past 1400 rounds.

I advocate that you start conservatively (clean less aggressively) and find a system that works well for your cartridge and discipline.

If for example, you are just shooting one local match a month, you can probably be a winner cleaning at the end of the match, not every 15 rounds. I tied a 600-yd range record at my home range with a barrel that had 70 rounds since the last cleaning.

I have reduced the amount of brushing dramatically by using wipe out foam at the end of a match while the barrel is still warm.

Variables include rate of fire, powder type, barrel internal finish from the maker. But to cite one example we had one member who doubled the useful life of his barrels by soaking more and brushing much less aggressively. Remember, even with solvents, brushing involves molecular friction.

That soaking process also dramatically reduces hard carbon build up.
