hot rod 22

I usually start thinking about a project about 2 projects early,,got a PPC bbl at smith now and want to rebbl my first deer rifle next that was an A prefix 700 BDL 25-06 that has melted 3 bbls,,probably gonna do it in a 280AI to shoot the 168 VLDH,,then I want a 22 that will shoot the 75VLD -80 AMax class bullets to shoot at 400 500 yards

anybody shoot a

22BR
22 Dasher
fast twist 22-250 or maybe even a 8 twist 220 Swift

a 22XC might be a killer caliber also to crank out the 80 Amax or SMKs at speeds that would be lazer flat wind beaters,,

anybody know what the best way to get the 75-80 gr bullets in the 3250-3300 fps range with good case life and top accuracy

I have a 280 AI in Lilja 1x9 NBRSA contour. Loves the Berger 168 bullets. If your lookin for a hot 22 any one of the above are good choices. Try looking at the 22-6 mm AI in a fast twist. Should have no problem getting the numbers your looking for. Might want to buy a few extra barrels or get one melonited. Its a barrel burner. Scott

Mr. Big -

Howdy !

Your stated velocity range for .224" cal 75 - 80gr bullets is certainly do-able.

I can tell you that my wildcat .22-35 Remington w/ 28" K & P SS 1-8 would give 3,420fps from my accuracy/field load of:
40.5gr AA3100 and FED LR Match primer under 75gr "A"-Max. Primer switch to FED LR Magnum Rifle Match primer upped vel to 3,500fps, with slight opening of groups. After rifle assembly, I found that I could have gone w/ a 29" barrel, and still fit in a Plano " Airglide ".

I use 450 ft lb as the minimum threshold value, for enhanced lethality on groundhogs @ distance. In a 29" barrel, .22-35 shooting 75 "A"-Max
would be capable of 450 ft lb @ 1,000yd, using an appropriate powder choice. The "A"-Max was good for both target work and on groundhogs.

If I were to step-off on a new .224" cal wildcat right now, I'd probably have the chamber cut by running a " .22-6mm Rem " reamer in short; for a nominal .466" base diam. The .224" cal wildcat would be case formed by running 7 X 64 Brenneke brass up-into a 6.5 X 55 Swedish FL die
( LEE ). I say that because I formed my " DEEP 6 " wildcat brass using 7 X 64 as the parent case, doing the shoulder shove and neck-down in the 6.5 X 55 die ( w/ its internal removed, to make the die open-topped ). When forming " DEEP 6 " brass, the wildcat cases emerge from the forming die initially...... as .22" calibre. I inside neck ream & outside neck turn, to arrive @ final 6mm cal and neck wall thickness I need.

This fore-shortened version of the " .22-6mm " would have case capacity > .220 Swift; which holds 48gr H2O. My estimate would be 50+ gr,
as DEEP 6 holds 51.2gr H2O; and smaller neck diam of the .224" cal variant would reduce case capacity a bit from that amount.
It'd be interesting to see what this wildcat could do, w/ a temp-insensitive powder.... like IMR 4955.

Other thoughts:
If you don't think you'd be likely to shoot much past 600yd very often, a slower twist barrel set-up for 65 -69gr .224" cal bullets might hold appeal.
Sierra's .224" cal 65gr SPBT has close to the same BC as the well established 68-69br HPBTs. For a less temp sensitive powder choice,
IMR4451 could be one way to go.

I have I have a 22BR and a 22-250AI birth in 8 twist barrels.

I shoot 75 Bergers at 3250 from the BR and 80SMKs from the 250 at 3300.

Both are very fun guns in the 300-600 yard range and even out to 800.

I'd say the 250ai has maybe got the BR beat on case life but it'd be a tish tougher in battles I'd think.

Build a couple fast twist 22s. Problem solved.

Talk with Fredo about the .22-243AI

His runs the 75`s up to 3550 ish, if i remember correctly.

I have one in the works.

22 DASHER HARD TO BEAT CAN'T WEAR OUT THE BRASS, GOT SOME BEEN FIRED 14 TIMES NEVER HAD ANY CARTRIDGE THAT IS THAT EASY ON BRASS, POWDER FOR POWDER THESE DASHER A HARD TO BEAT, MOST OTHER ARE OVERBORE THESE SHINE!!!!!!!!!

I am shooting 80 grain VLD's out of one my 22 Dasher's at speeds over 3300 with H4350. Cases way outlast my 22-250 AI and accuracy is better. I have my 22-250 AI shooting 55 grain Ballistic Tips at 4150. Both of them serve their intended purposes quite well though.

Ps. The accuracy you have been obtaining from the 6br case wildcats has been phenomenal so why change? Stick with one of its variants, the 22 Dasher.

heck tis link out.

22-243 and a 1-8tw. I'm pushing a 75 Amax over 3500fps with a 28" Brux barrel. It feeds from the mag, donor brass is easy to find, one pass with a 243 S Bushing FL die and I'm shooting. One of my favorite feral pig guns.

220 SwiftAI, 22-243 Middlestead, 22X55 Swede are all nice little hotrods I have, and all seem to be close in performance.

I always wanted to try a 7 twist or it may take a 6.5 twist and shoot the 90 gr Berger in a 22 Dasher.
I had a 8 twist, once upon a time that now resides with JamesnTN, that make 1000 yard Chuckies too easy with the 80 SMK's with 4350 or RL-17.

Dasher is all well and good if you don't mind not always perfect feeding. If that's not a concern that might be a good deal.

If you're looking for more speed and still small primers, 22x47L. They feed well also.

I'm running a 22-250ai for my son and have no complaints. Shot his first 1/2moa 100yd groups with it at 8. We'll probably stick with it for the next barrel unless we switch to the 22x47L.

Want a hot rod? Look at the .22-6mm. Have one with 30" Krieger that easily runs 80.5 Bergers at 3600 and shoots 3 shots in the teens. Go to the 75's and you are looking at 37-3800. Easy to form cases, simply run 6mm Rem brass into the .22-6mm die and trim. Best powder I have found is Norma MRP. Bill
