Hoarders? Really?

Hoarding, affording, prepping, stocking up personal inventory... call it whatever.
The year before election year is/was always a good time to stock up. (ha, good luck this year)
In early 2019 I bought 16lbs of Varget, 8lbs of 4166, 8lbs of SW Precision & 10,000 cci 450s. Back then, all of this stuff was available so i wouldnt call it hoarding. Its prepping... No way would I pay todays prices. When and if I ever run out, I'll stick to just fishing.
I do have regrets not buying a few more cases of 22lr Geco Rifle @ $200 a case, my cz455 loves that stuff.
Some may call it hoarding but refer to it as looking ahead, planning ahead & thinking ahead, especially if the "stash" occurred by buying a brick here and there to meet their shooting needs at the time.

SRM is a lot more desirable than LRM in my house. In retrospect, you probably wish you would have bought all 1,600,000 of them ($32,000 would have been a steal for them and you could have quadrupled your money easy….hindsight is 20/20).
Dave
I could have bought them all, but I didn't. However I did think some from here would buy some from the vendor....but if they did, they didn't reply to the thread.
I have 24lbs of H4895 I don't shoot anymore and those 30,000 primers.
Also 24 lbs of H1000 left over.
I'll hold on to them for a while longer.
Good bartering tools.

In the movie Jeremiah Johnson, where the old man, bear claws, tells Jeremiah when he wakes up in the middle of the night steaming hot “didn’t put enough dirt down, saw it right off”
Some people that do a lot of shooting did not put enough dirt down especially when it was less expensive.

Just me and the dogs this weekend, the never-ending quotes sent me to the library.
I'm gonna let it loop while my buddy loads his next test.20230725_172409.jpg

I usually watch it twice a year. Actually, I am past due. Maybe I will do the same thing this weekend. I always watch it with my son right before deer season in my neck of the woods. I always feel grounded after watching it. It brings back pleasant memories of my early teen years when seeing it for the first time at the Drake theater in Oil City,Pennsylvania. Watch your top knot. Watch yourn. You wouldn’t happen to know what month of the year it is?

So I guess the question to ask ourselves should be is it really hoarding or just proper planning? Would you leave on vacation knowing you didn’t have enough gas to reach your destination also knowing the gas stations may all be closed along the way?

I’m tired of the word hoarding being thrown around. Thank goodness I had enough powder and primers available to help some friends out during this period of tight distribution. Personally, I am currently testing alternative powders and sharing what I learn, as I learn it.

Components are neither readily available nor cheap but blaming it on someone else, simply because they prioritized their spending differently than you did, doesn’t make them a hoarder, it actually makes you a poor planner. Now the exception to this would be new shooters just getting into the game. We should all be trying to help them out, but anyone who has reloaded ammo for a while should have seen this coming and been prepared. History does repeat itself.

I’m sorry if this offends you as you read this, but it’s how I feel and if the truth hurts, it hurts. I have just had it with people trying to blame others for their lack of proper planning.

Dave.

Or call me a hoarder if you prefer.
Nope...I won't get upset...I always kept a reasonable stash of rimfire ie 10-15 k...on cf rifle a minimum of 200 rds plus reloading..black powder stay below legal limit but more than average...caps I would buy 1k at a time till things got crazy....I never thought I'd get caught on powder n primers...ok as long as I don't compete.

So just what is the legal limit on black powder?

Newcomers to the shooting sports are in a predicament unless they have deep pockets and I know many of us have helped them out with components.

The "Hoarder" label is thrown around frequently and I guess in some cases it is appropriate. On the other hand, those of us that have been involved in the firearms sports for 60+ years plus being second and third generation shooters pretty much have accumulated what would be interpreted as a "horde" by relative new shooters.

Been watching the thread and do think the situation goes beyond the normal pattern of supply and demand driving prices up on componnents.

Those are incredible bartering tools. Both powders are great shooters and highly sought after. I’ve had great luck working up a back up load for 3 rifles with H4895. Then I filed the info in my load books and put the remaining 14 pounds on the shelf for the future.

Federal law is 50 lbs for sporting purpose...and cities and places have lower limits...I store in separate 5 lb increments away from house...yrs ago I ruined a barrel with pyrodex forgot to clean..this was in early 80s and I had it in my mind it wasn't corrosive. I only use black and no substitute...777 in traditional sidelocks have cracked stocks due to those wanting express loads. Besides, holy black is the only powder that can get wet dried and used.
I'm new to this site, and new to n e Kentucky, and finding handloader who also cast bullets for old odd calibers brings a ??? So any casters are welcome to contact.

Am I a hoarder? Don't know...paranoid? Yep...I have turned loose a tin of caps or rimfire mags and didn't gouge on price...I also stated that if they go burn it up it was their problem..but I feel anyone should have a box of ammo for trail/ truck gun...
