Hoarders? Really?

I used to complain about people hoarding back when I could get a pound of whatever powder I wanted whenever I wanted to get it.

After learning the powder lot change lesson, that approach didn't work at all. And after learning how differently primers behave, it made great sense to go long when they were available.

Having a solid supply of the SAME powder, primers, and bullets is an obvious wise approach to me now.

Correct....! You may think the price is too high for you, but dozens of other guys that have been searching for the same thing stumble across it and jerk the sellers arm off because they think it's a bargain! There were millions of new gun owners hitting the scene that also are becoming reloaders, and don't know any prices except the current ones, so to them it's not high because they never had anything to compare it to before....
Well yes this is true about the new reloaders. But I started at the tail end of lower prices and didnt understand what the "Old Timers" were saying about past shortages. I buy in smaller amounts (compared to others) to build my stock. JMHO...Take inventory and base your purchasing on your needs to shoot and protect. This is how I do it.....might not work for others.

Damn Pat, know I think I have a problem and may need to start going to weekly meetings!
Just this morning, I was talking to the little Mrs about building a cellar for more of a climate controlled storage for “veggies and such”.
Am I a hoarder?

I wonder what the crazy dirt foot hippies down the road will think?

LMAO........I installed a 12'x20' metal building with Mini split AC as my reloading room I can do generator back up as well. We can only hope the Newbies are paying attention. You are not a "HORDER" if you are covering your personal stock as I see it.

So I guess the question to ask ourselves should be is it really hoarding or just proper planning? Would you leave on vacation knowing you didn’t have enough gas to reach your destination also knowing the gas stations may all be closed along the way?

I’m tired of the word hoarding being thrown around. Thank goodness I had enough powder and primers available to help some friends out during this period of tight distribution. Personally, I am currently testing alternative powders and sharing what I learn, as I learn it.

Components are neither readily available nor cheap but blaming it on someone else, simply because they prioritized their spending differently than you did, doesn’t make them a hoarder, it actually makes you a poor planner. Now the exception to this would be new shooters just getting into the game. We should all be trying to help them out, but anyone who has reloaded ammo for a while should have seen this coming and been prepared. History does repeat itself.

I’m sorry if this offends you as you read this, but it’s how I feel and if the truth hurts, it hurts. I have just had it with people trying to blame others for their lack of proper planning.

Dave.

Or call me a hoarder if you prefer.
I live in a very small town. No place here to buy supplies. Did not want to drive hours to find supplies so many years ago I stocked up on all supplies ( powder-primers-brass- bullets) from powder supply. This was long before shortages and crazy prices. Now I am set for life-will leave lots for grandson to use. Not hoarding-not scalping-just stocking up for future.NO REGRETS. Friends thought I was crazy-but I still help them out with primers.

I learned my lesson when Clinton was elected. Primers were scarce for a minute and so I started to keep a years worth of primers and powder on the shelf.

Then Sandy Hook happened and it required 3-4 years for things to get back to normal. Today it may take 5 years. Is that hoarding or being prepared if I were to keep 5 years worth of components on the shelf?

Your right Chris attendance has been slowly declining thru the years. When you got me started in 2013 there were 275 people that shot one match or more in VFS, and in 6 power 56. 2019 there were 230 in VFS and 27 in 6 power. Last year the VFS went down to 195 with 25 shooters in 6X. This year as of 6-19 there are 134 shooters that shot one match or more and 17 in 6 power. I mean look at the attendance at last years 200-300 Nationals 24 in VFS and 6 in 6 power! That was the lowest turnout in IBS short range score shooting history. There were more people at the last shoot in CT the end of October than at the Nationals. Those numbers are pitiful. This sport is just like passenger's on the Titanic. It's not a matter of if it will sink, it's a matter of when it's going to sink. I did this stuff for 10 years and I knew it was time to hang it up.

I try to buy enough to burn out a barrel with my comp guns. Usually 2500 rounds for me. Hurts up front but everything stays smooth after that.

You might be a hoarder if you don’t know how many primers you have(you lost count long ago), but you’re emptying the shelf at your LGS anyway.

I know exactly what my stock is and I buy at a measured pace to replace what I’m shooting when I find it at a reasonable price to me. I make sure that I do not have an imbalance. It would be pretty silly to have 50k primers,80 pounds of Varget, and 1000 bullets. What will you do with all that powder and primers when your bullets are gone?

I buy whatever components I want, in whatever quantities I want, and I don't give a rat's ass about the sour grape opinions of the finger-pointing pseudo-economists screaming "HOARDER!!!". I'll still be shooting long after they run out of components. :):):)
