Hoarders? Really?

When I was shooting twice a week plus shot gun times were good for prices and supply. An old timer back then said to me if you buy a new rifle or a barrel make sure you buy enough powder, primers, bullets to burn out the barrel. In my case at the time it was a 308, and that meant about 20 lbs. of IMR 4895 and I always had 10-12 lbs on hand.
Now I use different powders for different cartridges and I still hunt and search for what is available and buy it when I can.
Is that hoarding?
I'm a carbon copy.

I disagree. Demand only raises prices when supply is low. Demand could double however if there is plenty of supply, the price will not rise. Heck, if there is an oversupply, demand could rise and prices could actually fall. The supply side of the equation is impacted by more than just guys who reload.

If anyone out there thinks the powder and primer manufacturers aren’t trying to produce everything they possibly can, they don’t have a good grasp of how business works. If you made widgets and knew you could sell 1,000 a day, would you purposely make less of them? If you did, the other widget makers would simply fill the void and you would give up your potential profit.

Dave.
Dave every time I see one of your posts I think about what that Billy is doing up on that mountain today. Life is vey enjoyable sometimes!

The term "Hoarding" in not really appropriate for this thread a better term would be
"Overstocked" for example, an acquaintance told me he now has over 100,000 primers and he did not buy them to sell them.

Now I know he probably does not shoot 5K a year so he has at least 20 years worth of primers probably 25 years worth. .

Is he overstocked? No ? Yes? If he had 300,000 primers I guess he would be better off right?

Match Attendance: Speaking strictly for short range IBS Score Matches here in Maine, there was a rebound last season [2022] likely due to C-19 restrictions being lifted. This year tho,' the numbers are down at both large ones, like State Championships, and for single yardage Matches.

Overall costs are a factor, but I'd say attrition is the primary cause of dwindling attendance. As older competitors give it up, they are not being replaced.

In the last few seasons we had several younger folks compete is some Matches, but only one of them now attends. Meanwhile a couple of long time competitors have thrown in the towel.

We had a 100 yd Match on the 16th and there were 10 HVF, and 3 Hunter Class competitors. Granted the weather was a challenge, but 10-20 years ago there would have been double, or even triple that number.

So far, efforts to curtail this trend have been largely unsuccessful. Too bad. :(

Your right Chris attendance has been slowly declining thru the years. When you got me started in 2013 there were 275 people that shot one match or more in VFS, and in 6 power 56. 2019 there were 230 in VFS and 27 in 6 power. Last year the VFS went down to 195 with 25 shooters in 6X. This year as of 6-19 there are 134 shooters that shot one match or more and 17 in 6 power. I mean look at the attendance at last years 200-300 Nationals 24 in VFS and 6 in 6 power! That was the lowest turnout in IBS short range score shooting history. There were more people at the last shoot in CT the end of October than at the Nationals. Those numbers are pitiful. This sport is just like passenger's on the Titanic. It's not a matter of if it will sink, it's a matter of when it's going to sink. I did this stuff for 10 years and I knew it was time to hang it up.

For me, that would be overstocked.

This example does seem to ask the question: When does overstocking become hoarding?

I am a newbie reloader (5years) and I got caught with my pants down in this last shortage cycle. I was miseriable cutting back on shooting. The senior members on this have talked about past shortages and I just didnt pay attention to the advice they were posting. So as of today I have a walk in closet packed full of supplies and I will keep purchasing but at a price shopping rate. As of now primers are my consern. Is this hording....I think not, is it being prepared, absolutely! I have been on this site a few years and the "Old Timers" got it figured out because they have seen it many times before!

Demand raises prices simple as that, if you have enough stock to last 6 months and not buy a single primer or pound of powder the prices will crash.

The problem with this is you may quit buying but the other guy keeps buying at the inflated prices'

Frank
Correct....! You may think the price is too high for you, but dozens of other guys that have been searching for the same thing stumble across it and jerk the sellers arm off because they think it's a bargain! There were millions of new gun owners hitting the scene that also are becoming reloaders, and don't know any prices except the current ones, so to them it's not high because they never had anything to compare it to before....

Hi, my name is Pat and I AM a hoarder and proud of it!
Damn Pat, know I think I have a problem and may need to start going to weekly meetings!
Just this morning, I was talking to the little Mrs about building a cellar for more of a climate controlled storage for “veggies and such”.
Am I a hoarder?

I wonder what the crazy dirt foot hippies down the road will think?
