Help me build my rifle

I was gifted a used savage 6BR 1-12 twist barrel that I plan on putting on a savage axis action and using for 300yard BR matches, possibly some PRS and long range steel. I realize the axis action isn’t ideal but I have it and have no other use for it. I’ve done some reading and it appears most guys single feed the 6BR. Is it possible to modify a magazine to mag feed it? It’s also threaded so what break would be good on a budget?

I am also torn on a stock for the rifle. Boyd’s pro varmint or a chassis stock.

@afret I know that reticle in your avatar! LOL

I love your rigs. Did you get your MDT Christmas card?

I'd love to drop my Savage 110 bottom bolt release into a chassis.

Axis II, I have read both of Your threads. I was once where You are, but started with Stevens 200, which was then the Savage entry rifle before the Edge/Axis. I have made and acted on many of the questions/decisions You ask about. You already have an entry level rifle, and You have been gifted a “used” barrel. So far, no additional money spent. But You need to load for Your 6BR, and this git’s to be costly. Maybe not so much for banging steel, or varmint hunting, but Bench Rest shooting gets expensive. Components are needed, and right now, we can’t just get what we want when we want it. When shooting at steel or varmints, a miss is not such a big deal. Bad groups and scores at a match increases anxiety level. So I have to ask, how many rounds are on Your “gifted barrel” ? Does it have enough competition worthy accuracy left to justify spending more money on it than the original investment ? Steel, Varmints, and BR, can all be done with the same rifle, and I recommend single load. PRS is a totally different discipline, and requires it’s own rifle, IMO.
In an effort to save You some money, just because Your barrel is threaded, doesn’t mean Your 6mmBR needs a break. And I agree with “froggy“, a Boyd’s stock is the most I would want to invest in that rifle.
To be competitive at BR, You “have to have” a good scope. That is money that must be spent, IMO.
IF You haven’t already, I recommend attending a Bench Rest, and /or a PRS match and see if You would be comfortable showing up with an Axis. Don’t get Me wrong about Savages, if You attend a match that has a Factory Class, You may see guys Shooting Savage Factory Target rifles, with $2,500 scopes, are avid reloaders, and challenge the groups and scores of the Light and Heavy guns.
To Me Savages are rifles for do it your selfers, mechanics enough, to do all the work on them, them selves. Savage shooters are guys that usually have a ‘67 Volkswagen Bug around somewhere ;).
Gotta finish this up. For reloading, Redding Body Die, to size and shoulder bump. Have LEE make You a Collet Neck Sizing Die, the seating die comes with it. It’s You money, You can move up as You feel it is justified.
Hope this helps, from a guy who has been where You are, and pretty much still is :)

Some great advice here. Put some time into researching matches and move slowly with choices. It will pay you back in a huge way.

Thanks for the informative reply. The main one I would be shooting is very informal 300yard using f class targets. I believe they actually consider it an F class shoot. They have a factory class, high $ class, an AR class, etc. I do have a $400-500 40x scope that was gifted to me for this purpose. As for the barrel, the person who gifted it said it’s a Krieger barrel that was set back and should have enough life left for me to use in the 300yard matches and if it’s not accurate enough for that it will be fine for coyote hunting and such. Trust me I have considered just buying a box of factory ammo to see if it will hold a group before buying dies and such.

I have less than 20 and more than a couple of Savage rifles, chambered in 17 Fireball to belted magnum even a 6BR. FYI I don’t own and never will a VW.

If you just want to play and nothing more, go ahead. If your in it for the long haul, sell it all and start from scratch.
There are numerous excellent actions out there that will accept a Savage threaded barrel with a Remington foot print. These will give you a huge amount of aftermarket parts and capabilities.
There are magazines out there that feed the BR case just fine.
If you don’t know, 6BR brass at the moment is not exactly what I would call plentiful.

The Axis can become a big money pit with no great returns, just saying, been there done that, got the T shirt.

I’ve thought about that as well. I’ve even thought about grabbing a model 12, 110-10 in 6.5 because I was given a half a grocery bag full of once fired and just swap barrels when needed.

You said it better than I could ! Except the part about the VW :) He He !

I have a few actions ala Savage thread with Remington foot print. I won’t go into make and model, I sold scrimped and saved for that first one. The next ones came pretty easy, safe queens and problem child rigs left the building.

All of my Savage rigs aren’t going anywhere soon either.

A while back, I bought a used Remington Stock. I’m slowly turning it into a Bench Rest Stock. Would probably have picked an action by now, but the “component criss“ struck. And, to get everything I want in a “move up” I would have to get a full out custom. And, I’ve had the opportunity to run some high end rigs, None of them worked with finger tips like Tom Mousels or Bart Sauters. What’s up ? Oh, you have to give all that expense stuff to some “ps”, send it off to a world class smith to complete the manufacturing process, and hope it doesn’t end up in Guam on the way back.

Yea , this is a real “practical” sport :(
