Inexpensive 6br build

I'd like to build an inexpensive 6br. Probably start with an Axis, swap barrel and stock. This will be for club level steel matches, varmint from a bench, and shot to 800 yards. Not a full precision or bench rest build, it will be shot from a Harris type bipod.

I don't have a gun yet, nor do I shoot 6br currently.

What twist will be good for the 80gr and up bullets, I'm thinking 1:9 at least? Who to go with for a decent barrel? If I could keep the barrel price under $300 for something around 26"-28" that would be ideal. If I can get trigger to 2.5 or 2 pounds, that would be good. I've been looking at NSS, but other than SSS (which I will not do business with), who else is there for aftermarket AXIS or other Savage stuff?

Just looking for some options. Scope will probably be a SWFA fixed 20x.

You're singing my song. I just ordered an 8-twist 28" 6BR, recoil lug, and barrel nut from NSS for a Remington SA sitting on the shelf in my mud room. I'm looking forward to dropping all of it in a '50s edition 40-X stock and seeing what kind of mischief ensues.

My two cents: Why not buy a Savage LRP in 6.5 Creedmoor. It'll do the same if not more than the 6BR and you'll save money on a stock and the trigger. From my perspective, trying to fulfill your mission with an Axis is chasing rainbows.

I`m doing a Rem. 700 SS Single shot action with a Brux 14 twist to launch the 55`s @ warp speed.

Hart MBR style stock, chambered in 6 BR AI, Jewel trigger, not decided on optics yet.

Should be a vermin`s worst nightmare....

I hope you are using a zero freebore reamer, I did. with aa2230, I am getting 3900 and shooting bug holes, 3/4" groups at 300 yards...amazing.

Rem 783 or any of the cheap actions is fine, I just threw the Axis out there because it can commonly be found for well under 300 complete rifle.

6br is decided for this build, just going to be a fun gun, a 6.5x47L build is starting this month for more serious stuff, so 6.5creedmoor is out.

Seems that a 7.5 or 8 twist is recommended, thanks.

Walmart had 700's with junk scope and plastic stock for $375 in October. sell the scope to a range rat and you have a decent action for a few pennies more than a 783.

I would not start with an Axis as the basis for your build. You'll be limited in trigger choices and stocks. Cabelas is having a sale this weekend on the Model 12FV. It comes with the varmint variation of the accutrigger which adjusts down to a much lighter pull. If you buy the 22-250 or 308, just ditch the barrel and stock and spin on the NSS 8 twist 28" barrel with precision lug and nut. Stock of your choice, but a good Boyds or EA Brown laminate for $180 will do well to start with. Buy good dies, and brass. You can't go wrong and it won't break the bank.

I did something similar with my 6mm BR Norma. I bought a used, but new in the box, Savage model 12, sold the stock and barrel and ended up with a target style action/trigger for $300. I added a $119 Boyd's stock and a Shilen 28" SS barrel plus a used Burris scope.

This bargain basement rig is good enough to win local 600yd BR and 600yd F-Class matches.

I'm also going to check out the local consignment racks and post some wtb adds. My only issue with the 783 is finding a stock.

Trigger I'm not looking to get down to ounces, if I can get a clean 2# trigger I won't be needing anything else. I know some mods to clean up the non accu-trigger and lighten it, reduce creep, etc.

Keep the suggestions coming. It only helps me get it going in the right direction.

My Cabelas is running a good deal on 700's right now. Mail in rebate and stuff can't remember how much but it was pretty cheap

A new Savage 6BR bench rest gun is an absolute bargain. You can attach a scope of your choice and at least till you need a new barrel
the shooting will be limited to your skill.
Once you need a new barrel, get one of the very good pre-fits from Northland or comparable and start winning!

I'd like to just drop $1500 at once, but this build is going to be bit by bit. Too many matches to fund to drop the money at once right now. So, buying either a cheap donor or possibly an action (Savage single shot maybe?) will have to do. I'm not set on Savage, it's just I know more about what's available.
