Help a Yankee move south!

Hi all, Let's get the hate messages out of the way first, ( I am from Massachusetts). My wife is planning on retiring after the first of the year. Thinking of mid to western North Carolina, possibly Tennessee. South Carolina or Georgia are not out of the equation either. Not Florida! Here is what we are thinking maybe an over 55 community, or nice neighborhood not looking for a lot of land or maintenance, Have a heart condition so don't want to leave her with a lot to maintain. Now the most important part, gun clubs. I have been shooting firearms as far back as I can remember I am 65 Have been an NRA pistol instructor for the past 14 years and 6 years ago my friends and I started shooting 600 yard F-class. I would like to be within an hour drive of a club that I can join as a member, not interested in a pay as you go range. Would like a club that puts on frequent matches 600 yard & or 1000, always willing to help out with matches. We plan on taking a ride down that way end of October and getting a feel for the area. Thanks for any input or suggestions. Just please don't tell me to stay in Massachusetts, this state is to liberal for me!!!!! Thanks Again Dave.
I am in Vale NC. WNC foothills. Remember, NC is 2 states in one. Research triangle east, clearly up north liberals or old school Dems. West of that it gets way more conservative, home town, biscuits and gravy pass the 5.56 if you please. With the exceptions of Charlotte, which has bled south and north, and Asheville, though beautiful , might as well be Seattle. Stay away from college towns, Greensboro included and look at small country adult communities. Hendersonville comes to mind as well as Newton . Learn to enjoy white liquor, draw your vowels out. Eat grits and livermush. You'll be fine. I welcome you sir.

I thought this was a gun board???? Did he register just to find out were ranges were so he could move there and get them closed? My folks have been in Calabash, NC for 25+ years from Long Island. If you don't like HOT and 100% humidity stay away from there. PS they are not gun people.

I have moved around a bit and never had any issue fitting in. Thats because I moved to places I liked, not places I wanted to change. So asking a southern man to help a yankee move south is not going to pan out so well. Just ask a man to help another like minded man to help out. No one likes people from other places moving in to their town and changing it. Thats been my experience. Now theres two sides to the "my states full" thing. I hate population and traffic like the next guy. Most of my family is in Florida and now I am again too. Yes, the increase in population sucks, but Florida is no longer a swing state. Its a red state and has the third most electoral votes in the country. So while the locals may not like the traffic, the country is better off for it.

First of all I would like to thank all the folks on here with their suggestions and support. My wife and I plan on taking a drive down the end of October and have a look around this trip will mostly be in the western part of N.C. Using the term Yankee was my attempt at humor, I don't consider myself one. I am a Veteran with a traditional upbringing brought up with guns, hunting and fishing. My mother doesn't like Trump but I still talk to her, after all she is 94 and lives in Florida. For those that don't like northerners the Civil War is over, however for the next civil war when our government chooses to attempt to take our guns away, regardless of what you may think of me I will be the one standing by your side defending our rights and will have your back. Thank you all again Dave

Coors-May l suggest you take the train/AMTRAK. Go as far South as you can. Then rent a car and see all those interesting towns/places you saw from the train

Forgot about Hickory. They do the egg shoot every spring, which is pretty popular though I've never been.

im in the hickory area.

we have hawk's ridge gun club, the range in vale (egg shoot location), and then the cleaveland county range (250yds).....but that's it.

its a decent area, but not much going on for shooting sports (at least that i've seen in my short 41 years)

I know this is an older thread and has been beat to death but my new neighbors from SD CA and i were talking on Sunday, I told them that developers were wanting to put a walking trail near our neighborhood on a sewer right of way and the land owner was fighting it.. The land owner own a lot of property and have donated money for a local library and lots of other philanthropic things. GOOD PEOPLE, as we say in the south. They said they would be all for it.. I went full Ahole on them.. First of all they will never use the trail as they do not and can not walk for exercise too old and bad health. I told them I wasn't surprised by them saying that. Then I explained why we have it so nice here and taxes are reasonable. Walking trails, bike paths, parks etc cost to build and maintain... This is what is happening to where I live all these dang people leaving places they cant afford and crime is high and they move here and vote for the same crowd that fcke d up where they came from..
AND the property they want to build the walking trail has a load of deer that the neighbor hunts and allows other to hunt.. ( see I got it back to shooting)
