Help a Yankee move south!

The end of April the wife and I are taking the camper and going to look in the Sanford, NC area for real estate, that would put us about halfway between Durham for the excellent Cardiac Hospitals that my wife wants for me and Coleman creek gun range for my priorities. Any info on Sanford and the gun range would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Sanford isn‘t a bad area. Where you coming from? The whole area from Sanford to Fuquay, Holly Springs, and Apex are blowing up with construction. Just get with a realtor and tell them what you are looking for as far as house/land.

Have you been to Coleman’s Creek? Excellent range and lots of matches. Another a little closer and still has 1000 yards is Woody’s in New Hill.

Summerville, Nexton development area. There is a Del Webb community among others. I can’t recall the name of the closest range there, 800 yds I believe. Another in ST Matthews.

Palmetto gun club is near Summerville. A great gun club. A lot of Pistol bays, covered rifle benchrest, fclass 1,2,3,6,1k.
Several communities, small houses around it. It looks Kinda like beach life without the ocean.
I don't know what becoming a member takes but i know I'm intrigued with the neighborhoods & love shooting IBS BR there....

I used to think that to be alone and left alone, you had to find a lonesome place, move to someplace kinda crappy. You know, no competition for space. Then I drove thru Chicago...so much for the crappy part. Full of people, despite the crappiness.

Then I thought maybe Ill move someplace with few idiots. Then I looked at stuff on the internet and realized idiocy isn't place specific.

I thought I'd move to the north...but winter and my old bones don't mix anymore.

I thought I'd move south, but I see that numbers thing and realize the odds are I'd move and there would be a bunch of relocated stupid people there...and I'd be one of them.

I thought I'd move west to Colorado, but Kalifornia beat me there.

If I go east, well except being on the ocean it just gets worse than here.

I am now thinking I am too old to go anywhere, and eventually I'll die and I'll get my nice place all prepared for me. In the mean time I am just thinking I am passing thru.

There is a lot of rural land in the Coleman Creek area, where the unusual Uwharrie Mountain range is very nice. Known for golf, the nearby Southern Pines has a highly regarded heart clinic.

My reply is based on D.o.P.E., you know, Data on Previous Engagement. Now It's gun related.. Smile..
E.g. Three families have moved into my neighborhood two from CA and one from OH. All hate DJT ( oops politics / But remember D.o.P.E.) and voted for KH... Two of the 3 are totally anti gun. My town is slowing turning Blue..
Traffic, loud speaking, rude people and always in a hurry now are now the norm in my once small town..

I would ASSume that the thread was here because another like minded individual was looking for a better place and political climate to live out the remainder of his life and enjoy his shooting hobby.

As for the thread, it was current on the main page, and I didn’t look at the dates when replied, and no I didn’t reply to anyone else because I didn’t continue reading any further after I commented on your post. Quite frankly, I’ve had heard enough negatively lately to last a lifetime.

I also grew up in a small southern town that has changed a lot over time, although I currently live in Ohio for work. My neck is as red as the blood that runs through my veins and I have a tendency to speak my mind. Some people love that about me, while others hate me for it.

I’m sorry, but I still think it was a dick move, regardless of your dope, and I would be lying to say any different.

I belong to a forum up my way that you can't post anything without someone making a nasty comment. It's just the way people are up here, I can be a smart ass at times but i do it in a humorous way so as not to offend people, just looking for a nicer setting to retire and enjoy the shooting sports while i still can, Mark W. thanks for being in my corner. I would still like to here from non negative folks on the areas I mentioned, anybody belong to Coleman Creek gun range? Thanks

I totally understand as I was you about 8 years ago. lol I was from a part of CT where I didn’t have an accent so it was harder to figure where I was from.

I was a member of Coleman’s Creek a couple years back but it was too far of a drive for me for a “home” range but it’s a great place. Will be shooting a match there in a couple weeks. If I lived closer I would definitely be a member. I am a member of Woodys Hunt Club in New Hill which has a 1000 yard range so I am happy.

As I said Sanford is not a bad place and you should be able to find somewhere to fit your needs. Come on down as we need some more like minded yankees to offset the other ones. lol

It’s on a gun forum because the OP is a gun owner and needs some help with his move. Simple as that. That’s why the forums are here. To help, Not just to ramble on about the same questions over and over from different people.

Our experience: 30 years ago we built a little house on 10 acers in LA (lower Alabama) played with my birddogs in the National Forest and made great, lifelong friends. I fit right in, a hick for WNY.
Got a lot of "you aint from around here are ya" but we made good friends. However WE GOT OLD and it became an effort to keep up the 10 acers and chase dogs. It is too hot and humid in LA, so we kept a home in WNY and returned every spring. Our son is our neighbor and my partner in keeping up the old family farm. We still went south in the winter and spent 8 winters in Destin in a condo, snowbirds. However WE GOT OLD and the trip became too much. We are suffering this winter in WNY.

SO, keep in mind that you are going to get old, your interest and abilities will change and you will need family and good friends to rely on. It is terrible hot in the south and you have to live in AC from May till Nov. But, boy, the winters are nice. I can't imagine living in a gated community with rules. If the dog and I can't pee off the front porch, the neighbors are too close. Your life style at 65 will change considerable by the time you are 85.

LA and NW Florida are still rural and great places to spend the winter, but don't get too far from your family!

I think you should also consider Alabama. No retirement income tax, no over 65 property tax (depending on county) Cost of living is on par with the rest of the South.
Wife and I have a very comfortable life here. We're in Central Alabama in a small town called Millbrook.
About 15 miles from Montgomery (don't consider Montgomery or Birmingham)

I'm 40 minutes from the gun club. Private, 24 hour/7 day access with gate card. Lots of committees, pistol & rifle. I'm the F Class match director. Check out Central Alabama Gun Club. We are currently limited to 300 yds, but property has been bought and a 1000yd range is coming soon.

IMO, and maybe some do, but what southerners don’t realize is the problem yankees are mostly city folk or… liberals no matter where they are from. We call them flatlanders. They move to the country and want everything the way it is from where they are from. Dealt with too many of them while working for a RURAL electric utility. They move out to the middle of no where (all of our territory) and expect the electric to be as reliable as the area they are from. We have about 6 customers per mile of line and serve the territory the large IOU’s wouldn’t. They know how to fix it too, just put all the lines underground…

Anyway, there are rural thinking people in this country and there are urban thinking people. They live all over the United States.
