A gun safe in the garage?

A lot of these solutions are not very good advice. You need the humidity to be kept under 55% and under 45% would be better.
The US standard for humidity control in metrology labs discusses maintaining humidity control to insure bare steel gauges and measuring instruments do not corrode or cause measuring errors due to excessive humidity.
I know your safe is not a metrology lab but the contents are very expensive precision steel just the same.
Storage needs vary according to the local heat and humidity. If you live in the high desert every method that provides a roof will work. If you live on a bayou on the Gulf of Mexico near blowing salt water and chemical plant emissions you might need a different plan.

I keep some in the garage, but I have heat cool power and after last weekend TV and WiFi in there.
Yes it would be easier to take for a criminal, but I promise they aren't getting back there without dying first we live way out in country and there is always someone around and cameras

my safe was taken out of my House
the thives backed a tow truck up to the front of the house , broke the window wrap a choker
around it then drug it out
40 k worth of guns missing , 25 k damage to house
Ins pd. 22k then cancled me

If you do the math (weight displaced per sq foot, sq inch), you'll find that your girlfriend/wife running around in high heels will cause more damage to the floor than that safe.

It wont hurt the floor unless you drop it... ;)

That's Damn right ! Particularly when those heel's start walking up my back!

I'm glad to see this three year old tread has been brought back to life. It serves as a reminder of what can happen and how to prevent a loss. There are three ways to protect your guns: a well anchored and well built safe, a good dehumidifier, and remembering to vote.

Mine has 8 1/2" concrete expansion anchors bolting mine to the slab. If a tornado hit the only thing left on the slab would be the gun safe and storm shelter.

Seems like there oughta be a law requiring the registration of tow trucks.

Drybean, I'm not trying to make light of your troubles. That is probably the mobestest way I've heard of stealing a conventional gun safe, and horrible to think about. jd

In GA. Mine are in the basement running heat strips and I run a dehumidifier to keep it below 50. If you turn the dehumidifier off it will jump to 60+ in no time on humid days. No way I'd have one in a non climate controlled garage in the South.

You forgot another way. Keep what you have to be known only to yourself, or as few trusted people as possible. Good post, though.

Some of you have been watching too many movies. A garage is a fine place for a safe. If I decide to break into your home and steal your guns, where the safe is won't make any difference.

Down in Florida ,it needs to be under air con . It sucks , have 2 whole house gen sets , one for back up , 3 portables , again just in case . 3 safe rooms built in . And a safe room for me and my bride .
I really need to thin it down , it's time !
Oh , and 32 cameras , 5 dvr secured and hidden . With metal gun boxes ( cheap safes ) with cheap guns that are easily seen and secured but not too much . Just enough for the dirt bags to think its the stash .

What happens when you need something with firepower in the middle of the night and the safe is in the garage?

If you don't mind saying, who was the insurer. I would like to make sure it isn't mine!

It's difficult to keep the humidity out if you have it in a non conditioned space. Gun safe placement in the garage is done all the time, just keep a large enough dehumidifier in it and keep the guns oiled as suggested above. One thing I would add is to get a wireless humidity sensor so you can easily view the humidity level and adjust as needed. I discovered I needed to install progressively larger dehumidifier rods to get the humidity level right. For the longest time I had 2 smaller heating rods in my safe and couldn't get the humidity below 55%. It was only when I purchased a 36" goldenrod https://secretstorages.com/best-wall-safes/ that I was able to get to 45% humidity.

As a builder of homes I can tell you that building codes are minimum that's a fact' living spaces have a LIVE load of 10 pounds per sq ft. Please check under the floor where you intend to place you safe as you may need reinforcement like an extra beam posted to a couple of concrete pads to prevent movement/ flexing of the floor.
Wherever you place your safe not only bolt it to the floor but try to add bolts into wall studs as well to prevent rocking , I could rock your safe forward then the weight and momentum will rip or bend the floor bolts and bam your safe is face down allowing access to the soft areas - sides and rear. Here's a tip( put a keg of black powder in your safe and when they start cutting you'll have bodies to send the loved ones.)
