Hearing Protection

Not sure if this is the right place to post this.
I would like some input on earplugs for shooting.
A lot of what I see in reviews does not impress me.
I don't like wearing the muffs, any help is appreciated.
Thanks

I have and like the Walker Silencers, also. However, I haven’t tried them for a full day at the range. I recently purchased mine for Turkey season this spring. They have a very good fit, are comfortable for 7 hours of continuous in-the-ear use and allow you to hear everything that is going on around you, until the shooting starts.

Make sure they fit properly. Go see your audiologist. Any is better than none.

I had a pair made for me when I shot trap at The Kenmore shooting range (Seattle). A lady injected a colored silicone into my ear canals and let it set. You twist them into your ear canal to put them in. These custom ear plugs are the best I have ever used. I still put ear muffs over them when working up loads for my rifles but don't have to -no ear muffs when shooting shotguns. Apparently you have to be trained by the company that makes this product and I have not found anyone that makes them in MT. Audiologists probably could make some for you. They are excellent!!

The company I work for sent me to classes for this style of earplugs. Made them for most of our power plant. They work excellent and last pretty much forever if taken care of and recoated occasionally.

I have used the Etymotic GSP-15 for several years, and I am very pleased with them. I don't hear well, have a hearing aid for my right ear, but me left ear is beyond help. However, when I use the Etymotic aids, I can hear better than when wearing my $1000+ hearing aid. I have been tempted to wear the Etymotics all the time, but although they are fine for shooting, they would look weird in everyday places.

I've worn hearing aids over 31yrs, my first pair issued 5yrs prior to retiring from USAF. I've worn double protection when shooting at public ranges since 1990, old school ear plugs with standard muffs.

Have gotten interested in shooting CBA competition with local group of fellas, and have been to 2 matches as observer. Bought a pair of Howard Leight Impact Sport electronic muffs (NRR 22) and they were not enough. Last match I paired them with Laser Lite in ear foam plugs (NRR 32) and now have to turn volume up to hear conversation at the range. The foam plugs are so comfortable I forgot they were there.

I normally do the Surefire ep3 plugs then the cheapo Howard Leight muffs on top. Seems to work decently well even around braked magnums.

Have been considering trying the TEP 200’s of better muffs but haven’t yet.

I have used and/or use:
  • Peltor EP-100's
  • Walker Razor Electronics
  • Peltor directional muffs
  • Howard Leight muffs
Of the four, the EP-100's are the best. They don't cut the sound until it's ~75dB, so you can hear well. I will use them with the 3M Skull Screws adapters, and overall they are very comfortable.

The Walker Razor is a "wear around the neck" electronic collar with extensible ear plugs. Once on, you don't notice the collar at all. The plugs themselves are darned uncomfortable, like the old yellow passive ear plugs. They feel like a brick in your ear after a few hours. I have since figured how to adapt the Skull Screws to work with them and they are much more comfortable now. Nice thing about the walkers is they are blue tooth and you can use your phone.

The EP100s and Razors have sound amplification settings, 3 or 4 levels. They have built in, rechargeable Li-ion batteries that last 6+ hours continuous use and are easily recharged like a phone.
The Peltor Directional muffs have an analog on/off/volume switch and use two AAA batteries. They have a narrow enough profile that it will not impede my cheek weld on most rifles.

I generally dislike being at the range with more than 2 other shooters because there's a much higher likelihood of someone using a magnum with a brake. Obnoxious. When this is the case, I'll wear passive ear plugs and the Peltor muffs so I can hear but not be deafened by the boom.

Both the EP100s and Walkers are small enough in my ear that I can wear passive ear muffs over them when there are a lot of shooters, like at the pistol range, and I can still hear well enough for "normal" conversation.

Me too then they decided to stop I've still got everything but I'm out of hardener and I need to make me a new pair.

Where can a guy get hooked up with plugs like that? I ask because I bought some plugs that I formed myself. It was like a two part epoxy deal that I jammed in my ears. They fit great. Can wear them all day, but the noise reduction isn't quite there.

Sometimes gun shows will have vendors selling them or gun clubs do a special day and companys will come in and do them.
